AMES, Iowa – Hallie Christofferson and Chelsea Poppens combined for 41 points on 15-of-19 shooting to pace Iowa State (9-1 overall, 0-0 Big 12) to an 86-47 victory over Alabama State (2-9, 0-0 SWAC) Sunday afternoon in Hilton Coliseum.

Iowa State finished 2-0 in the Cyclone Challenge, winning both games (Air Force, Alabama State) by an average of 43.5 points.

Christofferson was virtually unstoppable in the first half. The junior made her first six shots, including four 3-pointers, to help the Cyclones jump out to a 51-16 lead at the break. Christofferson scored all of her 21 points in the opening period (7-8 FG) and had a game-high nine boards. It was her 11th-straight game scoring in double figures.

Poppens connected on her first seven shots from the field en route to 20 points (8-9 FG), the 13th 20-point game of her career. She also grabbed seven rebounds in the win.

Iowa State led 10-6 with just under 13 minutes remaining in the first period until blowing the game wide open with a 25-4 run.

Christofferson buried back-to-back treys to begin the run and Poppens had three buckets all off of nifty feeds from Nikki Moody to help the Cyclones take a 35-10 advantage with 5:51 left in the first half.

The Iowa State lead ballooned to 47 points at 65-18 with 14:14 left in the game when Iowa State head coach Bill Fennelly took his starters out and put in the reserves.

Moody matched her career high in assists, dishing out 11 dimes to record her fourth career game with 10 or more assists. ISU finished the contest with 21 assists on 22 field goals.

The Cyclones, currently the nation’s leader in field goal percentage defense, continued their stingy defense, holding the Hornets to 27.3 percent shooting from the field. It’s the sixth time this season where the Cyclones held an opponent to under 30 percent shooting from the floor.

Iowa State starts conference play on Wednesday (Jan. 2), playing host to Texas in a 7 p.m. tipoff.
