DES MOINES – The Iowa Legislature convenes on January 14th, 2013 and will consider a bill that would require any person convicted of or receiving a deferred judgment for an aggravated misdemeanor to submit a DNA sample.
The bill has already been pre-filed as of December 19th and was submitted by Iowa Attorney General Tom Miller.
The bill would amend current legislation that already requires a person who receives a deferred judgment or a conviction for a felony to submit a DNA sample.
The bill would also allow a defendant convicted of an aggravated misdemeanor and who has not been required to submit a DNA sample to move the court to order DNA profiling of evidence collected in the defendant’s case.
If approved, the the amended law would take affect on July 1st, 2014.
