DES MOINES – The Iowa Legislature convenes on January 14th, 2013 and will consider a bill that would require any person convicted of or receiving a deferred judgment for an aggravated misdemeanor to submit a DNA sample.
The bill has already been pre-filed as of December 19th and was submitted by Iowa Attorney General Tom Miller.
The bill would amend current legislation that already requires a person who receives a deferred judgment or a conviction for a felony to submit a DNA sample.
The bill would also allow a defendant convicted of an aggravated misdemeanor and who has not been required to submit a DNA sample to move the court to order DNA profiling of evidence collected in the defendant’s case.
If approved, the the amended law would take affect on July 1st, 2014.
I think every person should have a DNA swab of himself kept in a safe deposit box just in case an ID is ever needed. I don’t like the idea of the government having everyone’s DNA unless s/he is a felon or in the military.

If you can’t figure out why people in the military shouldn’t have DNA on file, they you are even more ignorant than I thought. @Katie – I’m sorry. I was 30 years military, DNA tested at least 4 times, so I know what you meant. My wife tells me that sometimes my sense of humor gets me in trouble, and this is one of those times. I know how passionate you are about things, which is one of the qualities I admire about you, so I couldn’t resist that jab just to see how you would react. Please forgive me. @ A Citizen-so now it comes out. You worked in a factory but had 30 years in the military so the nest egg you have is really a military pension. I would be willing to bet your pension is much bigger that your social security so basically you are living off the taxpayers expense.

@A Citizen-you misunderstand or else I put it wrong. You will never hear me say anything against a veteran. I appreciate everything they have done for our country. And you know nothing about me or what I have done so don’t be to judgemental. What I stated was the truth. You are on a military pension and that IS taxpayer funded. I never said it wasn’t justified. Now, that we are on the subject I do have a problem with some people. I know of one person here in town that was in the service, got in a fight in a bar and hurt their shoulder and is on military partial disability for life. Was not in a combat unit and was nothing more than a clerk Never even got close to combat. Do you think that is fair? This person brags about it all the time.
@LVS – You’ve got me on this one. Here was a person who was in the right place at the right time and is going to milk it for everything he can get out of it. Is it right? I don’t think so. Is it life? Unfortunatly, yes.
Why not take a DNA sample from every baby as soon as they’re born? What’s the big deal? That way we would have a complete database to assist us in solving crimes and identifying biologic parents. If you’re a good citizen who obeys the laws you have nothing to fear. I honestly don’t see a problem with this.
You WON’T see a problem with it, until the data is used in a way you don’t see fit. Then it will be too late.

I can’t go along with taking everyones but if you are convicted of a serious or aggravated misdemeanor I see no problem with that. In fact I like the idea. Do the crime do the time.
Where will Big Brother stop invading our privacy? Next it will be serious misdemeaners and so and so on.
