NIACC women upset No. 1 Lake Michigan

niacc_trojans_logoEAST PEORIA, Ill. – The NIACC women’s basketball team shocked No. 1 Lake Michigan 64-61 in the consolation game of the Illinois Central tournament Sunday afternoon.

NIACC (8-6 overall) trailed 30-13 in the first half but rallied for the 3-point win and the third-place team in the tournament, which featured four NJCAA Division II ranked teams.

“We’ve said it all year, this team is special,” NIACC coach Kelli Terrell said. “They are all on board and ready to help the team any way they can.”

“We were down 17 10 minutes into the game and I told them they were going to have to dig deep and play perfect and that’s exactly what they did.”

Freshman guard Lateeka Thompson (Burnsville, Minn.) led the Lady Trojans with 21 points and seven rebounds.

Freshman post Lashae Brooks (Nett Lake, Minn.) had 10 points, eight rebounds and five blocked shots.

Freshman Jessica Rogers (Osage, Iowa) scored 10 points and had eight rebounds and four assists.

NIACC topped No. 13 South Suburban College 68-55 in the opening round of the holiday tournament on Friday. The Lady Trojans dropped a 76-56 decision to No. 8 Illinois Central on Saturday.
NIACC returns to action Jan. 5 at No. 7 Kirkwood.
