Clear Lake man leads law enforcement on chase Saturday

CLEAR LAKE – Details are still emerging on a pursuit Saturday morning that began on Interstate 35 and ended in Clear Lake.

According to reports, a green Honda Civic with Arkansas license plates refused to pull over while southbound on Interstate 35 at about 11:30 AM Saturday.

The car turned off the Interstate and headed into Clear Lake on 4th Avenue South and turned north on 8th Street.

The driver, which was said to be Joseph Lee Barnes, 31, of Clear Lake, reportedly bailed from the car and was soon caught.  He was taken into custody at the 800 block of 1st Avenue South at 11:47 AM.

Cerro Gordo County Sheriffs assisted the Clear Lake Police Department in searching the vehicle.

Barnes was arrested and taken to the Cerro Gordo County Jail.  He was charged with a number of crimes, including driving under suspension, careless driving, reckless driving, speeding, stop sign violations.

Barnes is a convicted felon and has been charged with a long list of crimes including burglary, 3rd degree sexual abuse, forgery, theft.  Barnes is currently facing 3 counts of 3rd degree burglary in Floyd County Court and will go to trial in January.

Barnes is also a member of the Iowa sex offender registry, for the crime of assault with intent to commit sexual abuse on a female 0-13 years of age.
