From Clear Lake Police –

An 11 year old Clear Lake boy fell into the icy water Friday as he and a 10 year old buddy approached the open water near the aerator operating off of downtown Clear Lake. Fortunately his 10 year old friend, who is also from Clear Lake, pulled his buddy out of the icy waters.

Witnesses say they say the two boys walking on the ice a couple hundred feet from the shoreline towards the open water created by the aerator. As they got close to the open water the ice gave way beneath the feet of one of the boys. He threw out his arms, which prevented him from going completely under the ice. His friend then slid close to him on the ice that was intact and helped to pull him out of the water. Some of those who watched what had happened ran to Cookies Etc. and retrieved some blankets. When the boys reached the shore, these folks took the wet lad into the Lakeview Community Room where they helped him remove his wet clothing and wrapped him in blankets to warm him up. When Clear Lake police officers arrived after receiving a call from an employee of the Clear Lake Water Plant, they found him cold but safe and probably more worried about his Mom’s reaction to the harrowing experience than the plunge itself.

Also responding to the incident were members of the Clear Lake Fire and Rescue, Clear Lake Ambulance Service, Cerro Gordo County Sheriff’s Office, and the Department of Natural Resources.

we’ve had upwards of 60 degree weatherup until 3-4 weeks ago??? goddamn kids have NO BUSINESS on a friggn lake which anyone with the smallest amount of common sense would know that lake isn’t frozen completely!!! you’d a thought the flowing water would of have been the FIRST CLUE the lake wasn’t frozen… where the same hell these kids’ parents at? obviously NOT educating their children on the safety of lakes/open water/ice in winter time… HOPEFULLY little men learned their lesson, and am glad they both are ok!!! as a mom and they my kids, believe they’d be gettin ass’ kicked for stunt pulled like this

This story should be submitted to Gov. Branstad who annually gives Hero awards. I would do it myself but dont know how. This young man demonstrated bravery, good judgement and a selfless act of kindness beyond belief. God Bless him.

you forgot act of STUPIDITY on both boys’ part for lack of common sense to NEVER go near open water on a lake that isn’t completely frozen over…

Good job kid way to be brave…

glad everyone is ok

Those aerators are dangerous. While they help create oxygen for the fish they let the geese sit in the open water and crap all winter.

I notice in the summer beaches have to be closed when the water temperature goes up and e-coli raise it’s head.

Aerators change the natural balance of nature. Man has changed Clear Lake dramatically over the last 75 years. Not all for the better either.
