President responds to petition on reducing gun violence

President Barack Obama

In the days since the tragedy in Newtown, Americans from all over the country have called for action to deter mass shootings and reduce gun violence, and hundreds of thousands of people have signed a petition to “Start the process to enact Federal Gun control reforms.”  In a video message Friday, President Obama responds, explaining a comprehensive effort to come up with a broader set of serious proposals and encouraging Americans to continue their participation in this important process.

The White House said Friday that “President Obama is paying close to attention to the public response to this tragedy.”

Among is remarks, the President said “We know this is a complex issue that stirs deeply held passions and political divides. And as I said on Sunday night, there’s no law or set of laws that can prevent every senseless act of violence in our society. We’re going to need to work on making access to mental health care at least as easy as access to a gun. We’re going to need to look more closely at a culture that all too often glorifies guns and violence. And any actions we must take must begin inside the home and inside our hearts.  But the fact that this problem is complex can no longer be an excuse for doing nothing.”

I know I am wasting my time here, but I do have a little time to waste this am so…NO ONE IS TRYING TO TAKE AWAY ALL YOUR GUNS.

@Happy Guy, you can say that till you are blue in the face but WHEN it happens there will be alot of shooting going on so out better keep your head down.

maybe, you read to many NRA news letters. Through all of this I haven’t heard of anyone wanting to take away all guns. You would have a vote on it if that was ever proposed.

You are wrong. We don’t get to vote on repealing an amendment. The state legislatures do. There has to be a new amendment that removes the old amendment:

Constitution of the United States of America, Article V: The Congress, whenever two thirds of both Houses shall deem it necessary, shall propose Amendments to this Constitution, or, on the Application of the Legislatures of two thirds of the several States, shall call a Convention for proposing Amendments, which, in either Case, shall be valid to all Intents and Purposes, as Part of this Constitution, when ratified by the Legislatures of three fourths of the several States, or by Conventions in three fourths thereof, as the one or the other Mode of Ratification may be proposed by the Congress; Provided that no Amendment which may be made prior to the Year One thousand eight hundred and eight shall in any Manner affect the first and fourth Clauses in the Ninth Section of the first Article, and that no State, without its Consent, shall be deprived of it’s equal Suffrage in the Senate.

So, An amendment removing an amendment is a repeal.

katie you maybe right on that. I’ll check into it more

Today 299,999,973 legally owned guns didn’t kill anyone.

@Anonoymouse-and this year alone over 33,0000 people have died from those cruel car wrecks. Better get those cars off the roads. They are to dangerous to drive.

You can take my guns that protect my family from my dead hands.

Does that tell you how many people own guns and can also sign a petition against tougher laws? I believce gun owners are the majority. Check it out just how many owners there are.

The official count is over 300,000,000 guns out there. Even if every gun owner owned 2 guns that would be 150,000,000 gun owners. Can you imagine the size of the army if the government decided to confiscate guns?

So hundreds of thousands of people sign a petition for stronger gun laws and he decided to do something about it yet when hundreds of thousands of people signed a petition against stronger gun laws and nothing gets done.

Must of had a brain fart from a the beer he drinks.
