Facebook testing the charging of fees to send messages

Facebook announced on their website on Thursday that it is testing the charging of fees to its members to send messages.

Apparently, Facebook says that at times, some messages from people you may not know are routed to a folder called “other” instead of your inbox.

Under this possible new option, you may be offered the option to pay a small fee, reportedly $1, to guarantee that the message you want to send to a person who is not your Facebook friend will reach that person’s inbox.

“Today we’re starting a small experiment to test the usefulness of economic signals to determine relevance” Facebook said in a news release Thursday. “This test will give a small number of people the option to pay to have a message routed to the Inbox rather than the Other folder of a recipient that they are not connected with.”

Facebook also said it will continue to “iterate and evolve” messages over the coming months.
