Tornquist blows his stack, teams with Bookmeyer to trample on free speech

At-large City Council member Scott Tornquist shows NIT Publisher Matt Marquardt what he really thinks about listening to citizens express themselves.

MASON CITY – City Council member Scott Tornquist just couldn’t take another word Tuesday night.

Tornquist stormed out of Tuesday night’s city council meeting in the middle of the public forum before the meeting was adjourned after at least three run-ins with citizens that evening.

Tornquist, who has had run-ins with citizens in the past, earlier in the evening exclaimed “I’m done!” as he traded words with citizens over the Mercy development agreement (see video).

Prior to that outburst, Tornquist told NIT Publisher Matt Marquardt that he would “throw your ass out” after Marquardt told Tornquist and Mayor Eric Bookmeyer to have respect for citizens (see video).  Tornquist, backed by Bookmeyer, loudly interrupted Mason City citizen Sandra Servantez when she mentioned the Park Inn Hotel as she described the “chaos” the Mason City Human Rights Commission is currently embroiled in due to Bookmeyer’s appointments to that board.

Later, a man who was approaching the podium to speak at the public listening post said in a loud voice “Mr. Tornquist, you are in error!” He was referring to Tornquist’s earlier rant on the proximity of homes to Mercy’s property.

NIT Publisher Matt Marquardt sought an answer from Mayor Eric Bookmeyer

After Marquardt’s remark to Bookmeyer and Tornquist about having respect for citizens, Bookmeyer told Marquardt that he did “not expect to hear another word out of you this evening” and asked if that was understood.  There were two police officers in attendance Tuesday night.

Later, when Marquardt exercised his democratic right to address the council during the public listening post, Bookmeyer deemed Marquardt’s remarks about witnessing Bookmeyer being thrown out of the Other Place bar a “personal attack” and Tornquist then grabbed his coat and briefcase and headed for the exit.

“You can talk all night if you want,” Tornquist said as he walked out the door.

Tornquist is such a douche! Who the heck does he think he is? VOTE these bums out next election!!!

I think they are molding turnedcoat to be the next mayor, training so to speak

Our mayor and council members should be ashamed of themselves for the way they conduct themselves. Ridiculous! Mason City is struggling in more ways than one and all they care about is stupid stuff. Statues, Park Inn, the chamber. C’mon people, we need more police, a safer community, and jobs.
I hope that NONE of the yahoos get re-elected. It’s time for some common sense and people on the council that actually care about the community and the people that live here.
It’s too bad that Bookmeyer and Tornquist just don’t resign. That’s my Christmas wish!!!!!!

I have never or willever agree with Mercy taking over more and more of Mason City. Its not going to lead to anything good. On a family vacation in Virginia a couple years ago my family and I stumbled on an abandoned town: seventy houses, a hospital, school, post office, the whole town.Wondering what the deal was we went to the historical society in the next town. The town had been built for the hospital employees and has been vacant since the early 1930s, when the hospital failed to stop an outbreak of smallpox. The buildings still stand because the CDC hasn’t cleared them for demolition in fear of another outbreak. Mason City’s heading this way.

What a joke! Im glad I dont live in that sh*thole anymore. You got druggies and drug dealers, drunks, whack jobs and every other kind of scum. These asswipes are more concerned about helping out their buddies on a bunch of worthless crap instead of trying to find ways of getting higher paying jobs into town. And they hate to hear the truth and want to silence the 99% of the city who are against them. Hopefully at some point the people will get smart and vote out every single one of them.

I wrote the following to Matt in an email, but he asked that I post it here. I have my flame-proof long johns on today:

I never did see the relevance of the money spent on the Wright Hotel to the Mercy discussion, if that’s what was being discussed. I believe Mr. Tornquist was correct to ask Sandy to stay on focus. The council would not allow the sculptures to be dragged into every discussion of business, either.

Matt, I’m sorry, but I felt you went to the microphone for the sole purpose of trying to intimidate the council members. Your words said that as well as your body language. The head shakes, the jaw movements, the pointing, the tapping, the posturing. It was actually pretty scary. You had nothing to add to the agenda and I feel that everything you said was just a personal attack. You would have accomplished a lot more had you stuck to the agenda issues and addressed the council members appropriately for a city council meeting. Calling someone “dude” in that setting just doesn’t cut it in most people’s book. They were polite and called you Mr. Marquardt.

Their reaction wasn’t entirely acceptable, either, because I feel they should have adhered to procedure and told you to address an agenda item or be seated. If you refused to be seated, they should have had the cops escort you out. They would have had every right, Matt, especially if you refused to sit down. They have to follow Robert’s Rules of Order or some formal rules and they can’t allow citizens to talk about items not on the agenda or there would be disorder and mayhem. They also shouldn’t have to sit and listen to public personal attacks from anyone that don’t have to do with items on the agenda or removal from office.

I had to let you know how I felt about this. You need to tone it down a little (a lot) to gain some respect with the community as a journalist.

I hope this doesn’t make you angry. It’s meant to be constructive as well as truthful from my perspective had I been in the audience. The old saying “honey gets more flies than vinegar” might work to your advantage.

Katie, I do agree with much of what you’ve said. Matt is doing us a great service with his honest and forthright reporting on NIT, but a little more tact and professionalism would go a long way.

Having said the above, it’s so obvious to me that Scott Tornquist is doing everything he can to be Mayor Bookmeyer’s “pet”. He wants so badly to be the mayor’s “good buddy”. I suppose it makes him feel important. He should, instead, concentrate on being a good public servant and making the kinds of decisions that benefit all of the people of Mason City. That’s what he was elected for.

Katie, I totally agree with you. There is a real “hatred” between Matt and the Mayor. I can see both sides. Matt needs to get beyond this and just report and not try to bait or attack them.Sandy was getting way off topic and needed to be reigned in. Matt should have just kept filming and let the video speak for itself. It is NOT the end of civilization or close to it , it is just two people not really liking each other and showing it in public.

Katie I understand your point about Matt and his demeanor at the podium but how would you have acted after a city council person made a gesture at you. Its obvious Tornquist and Bookie are trying to intimidate a citizen of Mason City. As far as Roberts rule of order How many times haven’t we seen Bookie forget about this when its something he agrees with. Nobody can have it both ways not even the mayor.

The gesture I saw Mr. Tornquist make was for Matt to be silent. I then saw him put his finger to the side of his nose and then gesture to the door. I’m not an expert on gestures and I don’t know what that a finger on the nose means nowadays. It used to mean “thats for me to know and for you to find out”. I just thought he was using sign language so as not to interrupt the meeting vocally again, but Mayor Bookmeyer said out loud what I thought Mr. Tornquist meant by his gestures. I don’t think trying to keep people from speaking out of order at a public meeting is intimidation. I do not watch all the council meetings as I don’t live in Mason City. I own property here so I do have an interest in how the tax money is spent. I have not seen an example of the Mayor ignoring the parliamentary rules. Please post a video so I can see what you’re talking about.

I think the City Council members are very aware of how little respect some people have for them. Can you imagine facing each day knowing there are a strident few badmouthing you publicly every day? They have a thankless job because no matter what they do, someone won’t be happy. I can’t believe this City can even find someone who will run for office. I sure as hell wouldn’t.

Katie
I agree totally with you, I have alot of respect for what NIT is trying to do, however sometimes the article(s) read tabloidish… and well when you want facts you don’t want point of view fact with emotion and name calling, the intigrity of the story is then jaded. I am not sure then an as a reader if the article is mostly opinon and emotion for a personl venditta or if it is factual. I understand NIT frusteration, look at all the comments about CG board and well both kept their seats, whine and complain but we keep voting them back in…. And I am worried we will do the same for the MC council and Mayor as well.

@Katie-You have offered your opinion on what you think you obsevered so I would like the opportunity to voice my opinion as well. I have not discussed this with Matt and do no know him personally, however, this is my opinion. Matt had sat in council meetings for the last two years and observed the mayor and Tornquist bully and intimidate people during every meeting. During Sandy’s legitimate turn to speak Matt saw them again try to intimidate and bully her and felt he must speak out in all fairness to support Sandy. He was insulted and treated like a child by them as they tried to bully him as well. The mayor made a reference to further “repercussions” which to any man is a threat and not to be ignored. Tornquist is just a clown who follows his leader. Matt did what any man would do and confronted his abusers in a legal setting that was designed for the public to voice their views, and they being the cowards that they are, walked out rather than debate Matt. Again, this is a mans perspective on what happened and I can assure you that when I was younger I would NEVER, NEVER let anyone treat me as they tried to do with Matt. Even at my age I certainly would have tried to confront them. They tried to treat him like a child and didn’t know what to do when he fought back. Much different than intimidating and bullying Sandy.

LVS, the council meeting is a legal setting where the public can voice its views on agenda items, not personal issues with the council members, unless that is an agenda item. Also, I did not see what was said to Sandy as intimidation. She was told to stay on focus when she brought up the issue of the Wright building when the agenda issue was about something else. Try going to the council meeting to discuss the Highland Golf Course and then bring up the issue of the sculptures into that discussion. You will be shut down because the sculptures have nothing to do with the golf course issue. That’s the way meeting procedures work. If you want to sneak in a jab about some other project, you have to do it at the very end of your speech and at the very end of the last sentence so if you are told to stay on focus or sit down, you are already done!

Now if someone can get the issue of the treatment of citizens addressing the council on the agenda, then you can all go and complain about the way they intimidate citizens. If you can get the issue of how the Mayor doesn’t stick to procedures on the agenda, go for it. But these issues have to get on the agenda to be discussed. You don’t have the right to just stand up and rant at a city council meeting about whatever you want to. Otherwise, all you can do is write letters to the editor, post it here, or talk or write to the people disrespecting you in private. Personally, I think the best idea is to stay on focus so you can accomplish your goal for the issue at hand.

@Katie-Thank you. I understand what you are saying but I think I did not get my thoughts across the way I was trying to. The point I was trying to make was Tornquist was very arrogant with his sign language and was trying to humiliate Matt. I thought Matt showed very good restraint under the circumstances waiting until the PUBLIC forum portion to voice his discontent. I his shoes I do not think I would have been as patient. Can you imagine his frustration after listening to the bullying and intimidation for two years. As for what Sandy was trying to say, we will never know as she was interrupted by both the mayor and Tornquist. We will never know what point she was trying to make. It seems like the muliti-million dollar elite toy called the Park Inn is a sore point and they must harbor some guilty feelings over it if they were areaid to let her finish her point.

Well said Katie. My thoughts exactly.

@NorthEbder-It sure looks like you and Katie are in the minority on this issue. Are you Eric’s relative or is that you Scott?

This goes beyond the pale!!! I really hope that all those who are calling for change will actually put their money where there mouth is and start fundraising and recruiting good, sensible, responsible, SANE members to the City Council and Mayor positions. Mason City does not deserve this. I truly believe Tornquist has some type of mental health issue going on. Get him off the council and get some help. The Mayor has always been a bully and needs to be removed from his bully pulpit!!! He is supposed to be a stay-at-home-dad, but I am glad he takes them to daycare. Less influence on childrens minds. If we cannot find better candidates to run for election– this is what we are going to have to deal with— it cannot happen!!!! Maybe a grassroots effor is in order!!

You know, you don’t have to wait until the next election to remove tornquist & bookmeyer. Start a recall petition, get the required number of votes and have a special election.

Very true.

Pissed off little kids taking their ball and going home.

I am concerned. Public service is not a right… it is a priveledge. What if a school teacher, administrator, coach, doctor, nurse or other public service providers responded to clients or parents in this manner. Unacceptable… period. They would be reprimanded and be in jeopardy of losing their jobs. It is hard for me to understand why Mr. Tornquist or Mr. Bookmeyer would have taken on this public responsibility with what I saw in this video. If they can’t handle a little constructive criticism without controlled emotions and answers they should not be sitting in those chairs.

I am so glad I left early with my Grandson last night. Grown-ups should not have to see and hear how these so called adults acted last night much less kids. I would love to tell you what my Grandson said last night after I was told to sit down but it is a Grandma and Grandson thing I love my boy!!!

I better changed how I put that I wasn’t told to sit down that was the time before when I talked about the Human Rights Commission. This time I chose to quit because I didn’t want to upset my Grandson if again I would have had to be escorted to my sit

I support you and your efforts Sandy. The way the council meetings are run,I don’t think I would want a child to go there. These rude people on the council are showing no respect for us peons simply because they know they can get away with it. It will only get worse I’m afraid. More of us need to get involved and maybe then we would have some power to change things. I have seen a lot of MC councils and their problems but this is by far the worse. Long ago Tornquist told me of his goals for his children. They are to think of the public and not there own agendas on city wide issues. The statues downtown are the joke of the century.

Tornquist is WRONG, WRONG, WRONG, WRONG, WRONG, WRONG, WRONG, WRONG,

In the photo above, who could or want to listen to someone that picks his nose. Tornquist – Yuck. Maybe he was hungry after his outburst. Just Sayin. LOL

If everyone is smart about it, we as a city will only have to deal with these people untill November of year next. Lets show them how the people of this city CAN control what they do here, and vote them out!

I hope everyone including the Mercy Hospital, The Chamber, and our Business Community is aware how much this is hurting Mason City’s image.

We are never going to get Jobs to locate in Mason City as long as this is what we are presenting this leadership as our finest.

They are way worst then what they used to accuse Max Weaver of. At least Max had a legitimate issue to carp about.

A rough style is better accepted that a bunch of power brokers that display such stupidity.

Time for a positive change for Mason City!!!

Wow! I’m pretty new to this area, but this is unbelievable! There are rules that dictate the demeanor and decorum of the mayor and council and these boobs act like they’re in a fight at a bar! The people in this community are your BOSSES, you fools! How dare you silence them? HOW DARE YOU?

Keep up the good work Matt. Your always going to have the knuckle dragging bottom feeders beermeyer sends here to disrupt the site.

Go change your dipper annonymous It’s as full of sh== as your blogs. Whats wrong didn’t the fat man kiss you good night.

Matt you need to shut the f**k up and be fired cause all are is a fricken whiner. That’s all I ever see you do in videos out in public. NIT doesn’t deserve this kind of reputation. They really need to fire your ass!

At least Matt is acting alot better in public then our mayor and by the looks of it councilman Tornquist.

Yeah, Matt…u should be fired from NIT!
BAHH HA HA!
🙂

Matt, tell us you are not going to fire yourself. Say it isn’t true. This is so funny!

Wow. I’ve seen some dumbasses in my time but you take the cake. Matt OWNS NIT jackass. You are a serious dumb shit.

@Anonymous-Are you smoking funny stuff? Matt owns N.I.T. If you don’t like what he writes and can’t stand the truth, don’t come on here. You are obviously a plant of the mayor or maybe your real name is Scott.

Scottie what is with the gesture. If you cant take the heat then you need to get out of politics.

This was the talk at work today and most people couldn’t believe that a council person would be so rude. Tornquist must need some meds if he thinks he can throw anyone out of a public meeting. As far as the talk about our mayor, everyone thinks he is a big joke. He talks alot but doesnt like it when someone doesnt kiss his butt. Mr Mayor try a real job for a change then come tell us how to act. Matt everyone thought you acted with all due respect to these hypocrites. I just hope next November people will remember how this mayor and a few on the council think they are so much better then everyone and Tornquist can go away and Bookmeyer can go back to cleaning house. But this time at his home.

Matt, I do believe the gesture made by Turdquist was just to show you that only his nose is for the Mayors ass!!

Scott blows gas – clears council meeting – Matt revives but unable to speak !

I’m not sure who was more incoherent last night,Cheryl or Sandy. It might have been me since I was having a few while watching the show. That was the most entertainment since Max was the headliner.

Matt for mayor !!

This page is like watching a few minutes of PMSNBC. Not very newsworthy, but damn entertaining none the less.

I should actually thank turncoat for his continual better that thou behavior because if he didn’t try to baffle the LNI board with his bs and turn so many against him we could be stuck with the waste to energy plant.

This site is as much fun to read as the assault weapons blog is. People venting their emotions since there is nothing else for them to do. Similar to hitting a wall or kicking the cat. And yes, LVS, I noticed you said it again. And yes, I understand you have no respect for these two gentlemen. But I do not understand why you have to be so discourteous in your ranting. I have always had trouble with people’s veracity when they let their emotions rather then their logic guide their words.

@ A Citizen-I will try to do better. I do have respect for YOUR opinion and you seem to be a reasonable sort. I just tend to attack when pushed.

Come on folks, stick to the facts of the issue.
Council has the ability to rezone, etc. to permit the expansion of Mercy.
Mercy is a major employer and regional health provider – very important locally and regionally.
Mercy bought all the properties being used in their development at over market values – in the past I’ve seen them pay twice market value – so no one got shorted in the process.
The only ones with any position to gripe could be the remaining neighbors who think the character of the neighborhood is being adversely affected. Since this is a matter of personal taste all I can say is tough – suck it up and get on with life – no one guaranteed you immunity from every consequence of life.
When you start to attack council personally because of some perceived slight then your argument goes out the window. Going to the public forum after the fact is just that – after the fact of approval. If you really wanted to object and had valid provable information it should have been presented at the public forum before approval. It has been no secret that this has been in the works for some time.

@Forever and Mercy-again, I do not see where this article has much to do with the Mercy situation. It does have to do with how the Mayor and his henchman Tornquist treat taxpaying citizens. Matt and Sandy are both citizens of Mason City and deserve to be treated with respct. Their views are just as important as Turncoats. Turncoat is a arrogent A****.

LVS – whenever you make it personal then the argument begins to falter. Just because Bookmeyer/Tornquist might rub you the wrong way – and vice versa – you need to keep the high ground or you lose because you gave in to the impulse to rant.
If you feel they are mistreating tax paying citizens then the ballot box is where you need to focus your efforts.

@$ever-I will take the HIGH road whenever posible but I see what these guys are doing and it really does piss me off. Sorry about that, but what gives them the right to treat Sandy and Matt in that fashion. It was nothing more than an attempt to intimidate them. Not what you want from public servents is it?

LVS…yet more name calling

What if it were your home? If this expansion that Mercy wants impacts the homeowner’s property values and quality of life, then they should have to purchase their properties. The re-zoning SHOULD be a check and balance to this and to protect the homeowners. Get a lawyer!

Just how far out would you measure the “impact”?
I’ve been “impacted” by the noise of the ethanol plant but do not expect compensation. I’ve been “impacted” by a neighbor’s noisy dog but do not expect compensation.
Council has to weigh the costs vs. benefits to the overall community – not just the immediate neighborhood – which I think they had done correctly.
Don’t need a lawyer to think this through.

Mercy is Mason City’s largest employer. I hope they continue to expand in coming years and increase the number of higher paying jobs in Mason City…

I don’t think this article had much to do with Mercy. It did have a lot to do with how our city council treats citizen’s. Matt is a citizen as is Sandy and deserve to be treated with respect.

Matt was sticking up for the boards terrible treatment of a citizen. cudos

It’s easy to see that this “board” is on the Mercy North Iowa’s payroll..They even funded these peoples election runs….

Once again Mercy wants..Mercy gets…they are destroying this town.

Let’s be honest Matt…you are only there to cause trouble. You didn’t “address” the council Tuesday—you asked them questions that did not relate to any issues, and personally attacked Bookmeyer. I’m not saying I like any of our council members, but I really don’t like you either…dude. Grow up.

@North Ender-well it sure looks like you are in the minority here. Are you related to the mayor or maybe to Turncoat. Matt is doning what few people have the guts to do. He is standing up to city hall as is Sandy. Instead of bad mouthing them you should be thanking them.

I got a problem with YOU. I don’t like you….at all.

You suck. Got a problem with THAT?

Now go away.

So Matt you are saying the Mayor was thrown out of the OP for exercising his right of free speech? The Mayor and council have rules and can run the meeting however they want. They have consistently cracked down on outbursts from the audience which to me is what you did.I do agree that threatening to have you removed was a little much though.I think emotions were running high on all sides.

Bookmeyer’s free speech at the OP was just like Councilman Foster’s free speech at Papa’s one night — it got carried away and they dealt with it. “We reserver the right to refuse service to anyone.” They BOTH got 86’d.

Matt and Sandy-Thank you for standing up for the tax paying citzens of Mason City. It can not be easy standing up there knowing you are going to be interrupted and insulted. What does it take for people to realize that we have two dictators on the counil in Turncoat and the Fat Man. Yes, Citizen I said it again. And now you know why I have no respect for these two elites and their puppets. They do not care one bit about the common people of the city. We are there only to fund their pet projects. Voters-remember this when voting. Great Job Sandy and Matt.

LVS…more name calling?

Happyguy, you are getting boring, Is that name calling? Am I now a bullie?

Happyguy, this is so you know what the difference is. Not because of what you say here…but just because that is what you are…a RETARD.

That’s name calling. It’s also calling it like it is.

@happy guy-not name calling, just my opinion. Does it bother you that much that other people are right and you think they are calling names. It must be pretty tough living like that. I feel bad for someone like you. Again, not name calling, just a opinion and the constitution says I am entitled to my opinion just like my guns. Now, I know a bunch of liberals would like to change that and I sure hope they don’t get shot in the process.

now who is the bully?

@anonymous-Now we have another one who can’t tell the difference between an opinion and bullying and if he doesn’t like it he can stop his B.S. comments about me. I had completely stopped commenting about him until he started his crap again.

matt, have you been living in a cave for the last few decades? Don’t you know how wrong it is to call people “retards”? Name calling is bad enough, but you’re putting down everyone who may be mentally handicapped, through no fault of their own. You have placed yourself beneath all of them. Shame on you.

@Just My Opinion, you obviously have not been reading Happy guys comments. Matt is perfectly spot on with his post, I wish I would have said it.

Stop trying to be politically correct!

A CHRISTMAS POEM
Was the night before Christmas and all through the town
No citizens were stirring only drunks and criminals were around.
When off to Central Park with a quick look I did see
A fat little man who on a tree he did pee
Quickly I moved closer to see who this man was for fun
When he grunted out get away from me common citizen scum
I’m the Mayor of this town and I can do as I please
See how quickly my cronies come they do it with ease
Come Tournquist come Solberg come Kuhn and come Lee
We must change all rules so no one can question me
So as of today in rumors it’s said
The voice of the people is officially dead.

Terrific!!

Time To CLEAN HOUSE! I didnt know we had 12 year olds on council

Anyone else notice no bottles of water on the table this meeting but rather pitchers of Mason City’s soon to be marketed H2O!! LOL

Is there somehow we can petition for an impeachment and get turncoat and the beermeyer removed from our council and mayors position? This all a bunch of shit and Im sick of these 2 and maybe a few more wanting everything for only them

Wow I am appalled seeing a so called leader of Mason City conduct himself as so (Cameras Rolling)
Mr. Tornquist your behavior is UNACCEPTABLE! You owe us an explanation as well as an apology for such bad behavior. A job well done Matt.

Things just are not going the way the beerman and turncost want in their little minded dictatorship. Average citizens are nothing to these two losers which is why the beerman won’t work and turncoat has been fired from so many places. Keep up the search for the truth Matt.

I know this kind of crap will not happen to the citizens when Matt is mayor of Mason City.

thanks for showing us what our local council is really like … Dumb Asses !! Keep up the good work Mark !

Yes, Matt was probably in the wrong for speaking from the seats, BUT, when it was his turn to speak, the rudeness of the elected officials REALLY came through. Very sad.

I am not a citizen of MC and this why i am glad that i am not…seems like a bunch of kids running the show…the ppl of MC need to do whatever it takes to get these disrespectful clowns off of the council..and how did Bookmeyer ever get the votes to become Mayor????? WOW!!!

I ask the same question about him AND Obama.
