MASON CITY – Mason City and Clear Lake School Superintendent Anita Micich confirmed today that both school districts are reviewing security and emergency preparedness at individual school sites.
Micich said Tuesday that the school districts have a safe schools/emergency preparedness plan that provides a set of procedures to follow in case of emergency. She said the districts review the plan routinely.
“This most recent tragedy automatically sets school districts in motion to review,” Micich explained. “We are already reviewing the current status of each individual school site and the security measures in place and what additional supports/changes may be necessary. Hal Minear, Assistant Superintendent and I visited this morning and he will be contacting Homeland Security to schedule an audit update of our facilities as part of our process. However, we will continue to move forward on our review as we wait for response back from Homeland Security. We will follow a similar process for the Clear Lake School District as well.”
To date, North Iowa area schools have been spared and have suffered no tragedies or major emergencies.
In recent memory, the only emergency reported to the media in Mason City was a “code red” situation last October after a home invasion in the city near Roosevelt Elementary and Lincoln Intermediate schools. Both schools were placed in “lock down” until police could clear suspects from the area.
I think all teachers and administrators should be trained in how to use a high powered sling-shot. They could keep it right in their desks and have a bucket of pebbles right next to them.
Every school should have at least 1 teacher or administrator who is licensed and trained to carry and use a firearm.

Clear Lake schools have always had security including lockdown as soon as school starts and security cameras, WAY before Ms. Micich was named superintendent. If someone would want to get in, they would have to force their way into the school just like the killer did in Newtown.
There are many unemployed veterans out there why not hire a few for the schools. It would save alot of money as to if you were to hire & train someone else. Vets are already trained.
This would not save any money as the schools are all ready on lock down as said in my statement. This would not be in the budget for any school district.

This would not solve the solution to this problem nor would it be in the budget for any school district in the area. How are Ventura and Garner Schools secured, Mr. Wolfram. If I were you I would stay on your side of the track.

Were the deaths of 27 people in Newtown and the possible closing of that school forever in the School’s “budget” as you have mentioned twice?
The School in Newtown was in lock down as well, that you seem so comfy with in Clear Lake. You also pointed out, “If someone would want to get in, (Clear Lake) they would have to force their way into the school just like the killer did in Newtown.” (Ok, so you are saying it is possible.)
I don’t understand your point Mr. Muth other than trying to put Mr. Wolfram and another person down with your comments. Both have good ideas and you have a budget. There is plenty of money that can be cut from a school budget to hire a person to protect the students.

You must know exactly how much it would cost to properly train and arm teachers? your just the resident expert in mason city. All i read is you making empty threats and just creating an arguement. @Charles-you have just been hit by the NIT spelling police. Now that you have been corrected on the little nitpicking detail maybe you will be allowed to get back to more serious stuff. We all have to put up with those dummy’s who think they are so smart.
