NIACC weekly athletics update

MEN’S BASKETBALL

What’s next: The NIACC men’s basketball team plays at No. 11 (NJCAA Division I) Indian Hills (13-1) in Ottumwa Tuesday in its final game before the holiday break. After Tuesday’s game, the Trojans are off until Jan. 7 when they play at the Coe College junior varsity in Cedar Rapids. The Trojans return home Jan. 12 against Iowa Lakes.

Last time out: NIACC (10-3 overall, 0-1 in the Iowa Community College Athletic Conference) topped Madison College 90-51 on Dec. 9 in Mason City. The Trojans’ game against the Waldorf College junior varsity on Dec. 16 was cancelled.

First in line: Sophomore Chris Davis (Colorado Springs, Col.) leads the ICCAC in scoring (21.4 points per game) … Davis leads the league with 45 three-point goals … freshman David Humphries (Adelaide, Australia) leads the league in rebounds (8.9 per game), assists (62) and 3-point field-goal percentage (21 of 45 for 46.7 percent) … sophomore Josiah Lee (Peyton, Col.) leads the league with 54 steals.

By the numbers: NIACC averages 88.2 points per game, which is tops in the ICCAC … the Trojans scored a season-high 113 points in a 113-97 win over Quakerdale Promise Academy on Nov. 16 … the Trojans are 7-0 when they score at least 90 points.

By the numbers II: Humphries averages 18.3 points per game (3rd in ICCAC) … Mike Wagner (LaPorte, Ind.) averages 9.8 points per game … Sam Skogen (Mason City, Ia.) averages 9.5 points per game … Matthew Don (London, England) averages 8.7 points per game and is third in the league in field-goal percentage (39 of 63 for 61.9 percent).

History lesson: Davis has 707 career points and 106 3-point field goals. Davis scored 429 points and made 61 3-point goals in the 2011-12 season. He has 278 points and 45 3-point field goals in the 2012-13 season.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

What’s next: The NIACC women’s basketball team plays South Suburban College at 6 p.m. on Dec. 28 in the opening round of the Illinois Central Tournament in Peoria, Ill. The Lady Trojans will also play games on Dec. 29-30 in the Illinois Central Tournament.

Last time out: The Lady Trojans (6-5 overall) opened the ICCAC season with a 75-65 victory over Marshalltown Community College on Dec. 12 in Mason City. Freshman Chelsey Jacox (Plymouth, Minn.) led the Lady Trojans with a career-high 21 points.

On a roll: The Lady Trojans have won five of their last six games dating back to Nov. 17. They own wins over Milwaukee Area Tech (110-54), Riverland Community College (60-52), Rochester Community and Technical College (61-53), Madison College (78-50) and Marshalltown in the last month. The lone loss in that stretch was a 59-46 loss to the Grand View junior varsity on Nov. 26.

Among the leaders: Freshman Lateeka Thompson (Burnsville, Minn.) averages 14.1 points per game (4th in ICCAC), 7.4 rebounds per game (8th in ICCAC) … Jacox averages 13.0 points per game (5th in ICCAC) and has 48 assists (3rd in ICCAC) and 35 steals (3rd in ICCAC) … freshman Lashae Brooks (Nett Lake, Minn.) averages 8.6 rebounds (6th in ICCAC) and has 29 blocked shots (3rd in ICCAC).

WRESTLING

What’s next: The NIACC wrestling team returns to action Jan. 5 at the William Penn Open in Oskaloosa, Iowa. The Trojans wrestle at the Central Invitational on Jan. 12 and wrestle their first dual of the season on Jan. 15 at Ellsworth Community College in Iowa Falls.

For the record: Sophomore Basil Minto (Cape Coral, Fla.) is 10-1 at 184 pounds. Minto’s lone loss was to Waldorf College’s Anthony Pike (9-2) in the 184-pound final at the Kaye Young Invitational in Mason City on Nov. 3 … freshman Shakheim Chapman (Gumee, Ill.) is 11-4 at 197 pounds … freshman Sam Solis (Clarion, Ia.) is 9-6 at 141/149 pounds … sophomore Alex Stockton (Gardner, Ia.) is 6-5 at 285 pounds.
