Woman with history of drunken driving involved in accident at busy intersection

MASON CITY – Shortly after 6:30pm Wednesday evening Mason City police responded to a non-injury two vehicle accident at the intersection of 4th Street SW & Taft Avenue South.

After an investigation at the scene police transport the driver of the vehicle that caused the accident to the Cerro County Sheriff’s Office. Stephanie Michelle Helland, age 38, took a blood alcohol content (BAC) test at Sheriff’s Department. The result of the certified test, taken 68 minutes after the accident, was two conclusive 0.179 test results.

As a result of blowing well over two times the legal limit Stephanie Helland was charged with an aggravated misdemeanor count of 2nd Offense OWI, and ticketed for failure to stop in assured clear distance.

Helland posted a $2,000 bond a short time later and was released from custody pending further court proceedings.

According to online court records this is at least her 3rd OWI offense. She was last convicted in OWI in 2003 after a traffic stop by the Cerro Gordo County Sheriff’s Office. Court records indicated that was her 2nd Offense OWI at the time.

Helland’s license had been suspended for a short time in May of this year after she did not comply with paying a failure to maintain control ticket for another accident in January of 2012. Helland’s driving privileges were reinstated after she paid the fine.
