400 U.S. military personnel are headed to Turkey in response to threats from neighboring Syria.
Turkey is a NATO nation and aligned with the United States.
Defense Secretary Leon E. Panetta signed the order to send the personnel on Friday while on his way to Turkey. NATO has agreed to deploy Patriot missiles to support the defensive efforts, as well.
The troops should be arriving within the next few weeks, the Department of Defense said.
