AMES, Iowa- The Iowa State men’s basketball team has quietly put together a very formidable homecourt winning streak of 14 games, the fifth-best in school history. The last time the Cyclones lost at home was to Missouri (76-69) on Jan. 11, 2012.

The streak is currently the ninth-best active run in the NCAA among all Division I schools. Syracuse is the nation’s leader at 28 games, followed by Kansas with 26-straight home wins.

The last time Iowa State mounted a streak this long was when it won a school-record 39 consecutive games in a row in Hilton Coliseum from Feb. 16, 1999-Nov. 30, 2001. When the streak was stopped by San Jose State (Dec. 1, 2001), it was the second-best active winning streak in the NCAA at the time.

If you recall, San Jose State was coached by former Iowa State assistant Steve Barnes. Barnes’ San Jose State team shocked the Cyclones, 64-62 to end the streak. The next season (2002-03), Barnes was back on the Iowa State coaching staff as an assistant.

It is no coincidence that two of the greatest players in school history – Marcus Fizer and Jamaal Tinsley- were roaming the Hilton Coliseum floor during the majority of the games of the school-record streak.

Tinsley never lost a game in Hilton Coliseum. He was responsible for 34 of the 39 wins in the streak.

Iowa State head coach Fred Hoiberg was a player on the third-best homecourt victory run for the Cyclones. In a span of three seasons- Hoiberg’s first three as a Cyclone- ISU rattled off 21-straight victories from March 4, 1992-Dec. 21, 1993.

The streak started with an upset of No. 3 Kansas (70-66) on March 4, 1992 and the Cyclones kept “Hilton Magic” alive the next season by going undefeated at home in the 1992-93 campaign, one of four undefeated seasons in Hilton Coliseum history.
