UI Women’s Swimming & Diving: Hawkeyes Win 3rd Straight Over Cyclones

IOWA CITY, Iowa  — The University of Iowa women’s swimming and diving team won 14-of-16 events to down Iowa State, 190-108, in an Iowa Corn Cy-Hawk Series matchup Friday night at the Campus Recreation and Wellness Center Pool.  The win was the Hawkeyes’ third straight in the in-state rivalry.

“They all stepped up, both the swimmers and divers,” said UI head coach Marc Long. “It was a long weekend last weekend, and we came back to an intense environment with a great team like Iowa State, and I’m really proud of how the team stepped up in this situation.”

Iowa kicked off the dual with a first place finish in the 200 medley relay. The quartet of sophomore Heather Arseth, junior Karolina Wartalowicz, junior Abbey Tuchscherer, and freshman Olivia Kabacinski swam to the event title in 1:41.96.

Sophomore Becky Stoughton posted three first place finishes on the evening. The Peoria, Ill., native swam to the school record in the 200 fly, touching the wall in 1:59.68 to finish first. Stoughton collected another win in the 1,000 free (9:57.61), while sophomore Hillary Weigand (10:09.79) and senior Lauren Eytalis (10:10.92) were second and third, respectively.  Stoughton’s third win came in the 500 free, where she posted a time of 4:52.99.

“It’s hard to argue with a school record,” said Long of Stoughton’s record.  “When that school record was set, it was a Big Ten Championship, so it’s a quality school record. Even more incredible, she had just stepped out of the 1,000 freestyle.”

The Hawkeyes posted top three finishes in the 200 free. Junior Lindsay Seemann swam to the wall in 1:49.89 to claim the victory.  Junior Emily Hovren placed second in 1:51.82 and freshman Jennifer Weigand finished third with a time of 1:52.41.

Arseth posted a first and second place finish in the dual. The Plymouth, Minn., native swam a Iowa top 10 time in the 100 back, winning the event title with an NCAA “B” qualifying time  of 54.55 that ranks fourth in school history. Arseth posetd a time of 50.54 to place second in the 100 free.

Junior Joelle Christy posted two first place finishes in the 1-meter and 3-meter, while junior Abby Grilli finished in second in the 3-meter with a score of 292.58. Christy accumulated a collegiate-best point total of 327.28 points to win the 1-meter and a season-best score of 327.08 in the 3-meter.

Freshman Allie Orvis posted a first place finish in the 200 IM. Her time of 2:03.21 ranks fifth in school history and is a season best time.

Wartalowicz posted a first and second place finish, which included an NCAA “B” qualifying time of 2:15.01 to win the 200 breast. She also was second in the 100 breast with a time of 1:02.76.

Freshman Olivia Kabacinski sprinted to two first place finishes in the 50 free and 100 free. She swam to the wall in 23.10 to finish first in the 50 free and posted a time of 50.46 in the 100 free to claim her second event crown.

Tuchscherer posted a first and second place finish in the 100 and 200 fly. She swam a season-best time of 55.07 to place win in the 100 fly, while touching the wall in 2:01.92 to finish as the runner-up in the 200 fly.

The Hawkeyes concluded the competition with a victory in the 400 freestyle. The squad of Kabacinski, Arseth, Tuchscherer, and sophomore Danielle Klunk won the event in 3:23.96.

Iowa returns to action on Dec. 17 when it travels to Colorado Springs to take on Colorado College/Austin College at Schlessman Natatorium. The meet is set to begin at 6 p.m (CT).
