AMES, Iowa – The Iowa State track and field team opened its season strong with 16 first-place finishes in the Holiday Classic Friday in the Lied Recreation-Athletics Center. The men’s team tallied nine and the women’s seven.
Cyclone Ryan Sander clocked in at 8.00 beating his all-time best time by eight hundredths of a second in the 60-meter hurdles. Nick Efkamp won the 300-meter dash with a time of 33.93. Iowa State newcomer Kevin Poster won the triple jump with a mark of 46-01.25 Cyclone Edward Kemboi won the 800-meter run.
Lashiema Hampton had her first win in the weight throw after coming off of a red-shirt season last year. She viewed the competition as an overall building block.
“It showed us what we need to work on, but I thought it went well overall,” said Hampton.
Senior Donnise Powell earned first with a time of 1:22.24 in the 600-yard run, a personal best time.
“I learned how to be confident in myself, and my abilities,” Powell said. “God just blessed me today. It was a very good race and it felt good,” said Powell.
The multi-event group finished strong. Sophomore Bree Woelber earned first in the pentathlon with a new personal best time of 9.11 in the 60-meter hurdles. Teammates Anna Holtermann placed third and Kaci Storm ninth overall.
Senior Matt Harmeyer led the Cyclone men. He won both the pentathlon high jump and 1,000-meter run. Harmeyer placed second in the pentathlon overall.
Cyclone Dani Stack won the 5,000-meter run with a time of 16:08.73.
The day concluded with the relay races. The men’s 4×300 team took first with 2:18.12.
