MASON CITY – Less than a month after receiving plea bargain deals reducing felony criminal mischief charges down to misdemeanor convictions after a property damage paintball incident, two Mason City men are back in jail for stealing a dirt bike out of a storage unit.
Around 4:30pm on Monday, December 3rd, a Mason City police officer located an open door to a storage unit at 1621 12th Street NE. Police notified the owner and took an inventory of property stolen which included a Yamaha dirt bike.
Mason City police were able to identify three individuals involved in the burglary and recover the Yamaha dirt bike.
According to the police incident report officers arrested:
Drake Andrew Shimon, age 21, 518 S President Ave, Mason City was charged with a Class D felony count of 3rd Degree Burglary. Shimon remains in the Cerro Gordo County Jail on a 5,000 cash or surety bond pending a preliminary hearing on Dec 14th. Shimon has been assigned court appointed council. Shimon was also one of several men caught by Mason City police shooting at vehicles and breaking out windows last summer.
Wraymond Leon Todd, age 18, no permanent address, Mason City was charged with a Class D felony count of 3rd Degree Burglary. Todd remains in the Cerro Gordo County Jail on a 5,000 cash or surety bond pending a preliminary hearing on Dec 14th. Todd has been assigned court appointed council. Todd was also one of several men caught by Mason City police shooting at vehicles and breaking out windows last summer.
Braedon Steven Bowers, age 15, of Mason City for possession of tobacco by a minor 3rd or subsequent offense. It is unclear rather he faces burglary charges as well; an exhibit was presented in juvenile court on December 6th.
In 2008 as a juvenile Shimon was adjudicated for operating a motor vehicle with no consent.
Both Shimon and Todd were arrested in a paintballing incident involving damaged property on June 26th of this year. Mason City police originally charged them with a Class D felony count of 2nd Degree Criminal Mischief. Both men received plea bargain deals in November amending the felony charges to simple misdemeanor counts of 5th Degree Criminal Mischief.
The public is asked to call local law enforcement if they can provide information on other property crimes these individuals may be involved in.

Being a vet I was at the VA clinic in Mason City today and a man and women dressed to the hilt were walking around the clinic -up and down the halls lokking into rooms etc – they were dressed to the hilt like $2000 dollar suit and the women also – I thought maybe the were to be the 2 new doctors that are coming in and I asked my nurse about them – She said they were from the Des Moines police department and usually came in twice a month – WHAT? IS GOING ON? These people are not VETS ????
Plea bargaining should not be allowed. If they are charged with a crime that is what they should be prosecued on. No wonder we have all this stealing and destruction going on in Mason City. They just turn them loose to do it over and over again. Put them in a boot camp prison like they do in Arizona.
It’s the damn judges in that town. They don’t give anyone shit but a slap on the hand.
Plea bargaining is a part of the Criminal Justice system in the U.S. It’s use has grown over the years, and is now common all over.
Clearly though, I am not happy with repeat offenders getting deals, but I cannot think of any legal scheme of exclusion of one party over another.
Good work County Attorney and judges. You let these criminals bargain they way out of their crimes, and they are right back at it.
CRIMINALS HAVE TO LOVE MASON CITY. THERE ARE NO CONSEQUENCES FOR CRIMES. IT’S PATHETIC. THE POLICE HAVE TO FEEL LIKE THEIR WORK IS IN VAIN.
DO SOMETHING WITH THESE CRIMINALS. DO NOT LET THEM OUT ON THE STREETS AGAIN. THEY HAVE PROVEN MULTIPLE TIMES THEY ARE JUST LOSERS. DON’T MAKE THE CITIZENS CONTINUE TO BE THEIR VICTIMS!!!
