UNI Wins 10th Straight at Home; Drops UNC, 76-59

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa – The University of Northern Iowa won its 10th straight home game with a 76-59 victory over the University of Northern Colorado Bears on Wednesday in the McLeod Center.

UNI (5-3 overall) used a season-high 21 assists and buried 12 3-pointers in the victory. UNI senior forward Jake Koch scored a game-high 17 points on 6-of-8 shooting from the floor. Koch also grabbed a game-high seven rebounds.

The Panthers used a 21-2 run to open up a 27-6 lead with 10:47 left in the first half. The Panthers made six of its first nine 3-pointers in the game and finished with 12 made 3-pointers.

Northern Colorado cut the Panthers’ lead to 46-37 following back-to-back 3-pointers from Tate Unruh with 16:17 left in the game. But sophomore guard Deon Mitchell converted a conventional three-point play and sophomore guard Max Martino sank a 3-pointer to up the margin back to 15 points at 52-37 with 13:45 left.

Koch carried the Panther offense for a segment in the second half as he poured in 12 points from the 12:31 mark to the 9:54 mark. Koch did damage from the paint, 3-point line and foul line in the spurt.

The Bears were led in scoring by Tevin Svihovec with 16 points, Paul Garnica with 15 points and Unruh with 14 points. The loss dropped Northern Colorado to 1-5 on the season and it was the Bears’ fifth straight setback.

UNI will travel to Fairfax, Va., for a matchup with the George Mason Patriots on Saturday. Tip is set for 5 p.m. (CT) and the game will be broadcast nationally on the NBC Sports Network.

NOTES: UNI led 40-29 at the half … it marked the third time this season that UNI had reached the 40-point mark at the intermission … senior guard Marc Sonnen made a 3-pointer in his 18th straight game … UNI extended its streak of at least one made 3-pointer in a game to 401 … UNI’s 21 assists was one assist short of the McLeod Center record of 22 … seven different Panthers made at least one 3-pointer vs. the Bears … Martino tallied career-highs in scoring (6) and rebounding (6).
