Clear Lake Police Department

UPDATE: Clear Lake police Monday said that they responded to a call about a dog bite at 9 North Main Street in Ventura on December 1st at 10:37 AM.  Robert Kimball, age 88, was bitten by a family dog.  The dog had proper shots and was euthanized.

VENTURA – Clear Lake police confirmed today that an elderly Ventura man was attacked and injured by a pit bull dog this weekend.

Police said the case is still developing and could not release any details including the name of the injured man, who was said to be in his 80’s.  Police could confirm that the incident was a “family matter” and the dog belonged to relatives.  Police could not confirm whether the dog would be destroyed or not.

There was no word on the extent of the man’s injuries, but our sources have said he was severely injured and hospitalized.  “The man was seriously injured… he would have been killed if his daughter hadn’t been there,” said the person who sent the information to NIT.  “It was a very bad scene.”

Clear Lake police said that they may release more details on the incident next week.

Pit bulls are not fighting dogs like some believe. They are like any other dogs, they either have it in them to fight or they don’t (as individual dogs not as a breed). Thats why people who run dog fighting rings kill pit bulls, because they don’t have it in them to fight. Also the media is responsible for 60% of people fearing this breed. Most people have never even had a bad experience with them. Also with the media giving this breed a bad name it attracts people that want a “dangerous dog” and they make them mean. I just love how people talk crap about them when they dont even bother looking at the true facts and only relay on what negative things they hear.

correction-by that 60% I meant of ALL the people that are afraid of this breed the media is responsible for about 60% of that fear

Dog Bite Fatalities 2001-210 Compiled by CDC

Yr. Pitbull % Pitbull Fatalities All Breed Fatalities/Yr
2001 33% 1 3
2002 0% 0 2
2003 50% 4 8
2004 37% 3 8
2005 40% 12 29
2006 40% 12 29
2007 44% 15 34
2008 47% 11 23
2009 32% 11 30
2010 57% 19 33
2011 60% 9 15
2012 61% 11 18
This from the CDC… hardly the media. Time to drop “to all”

those percentages dont even mean anything…even the CDC said that…heres a website 2 prove it
http://www.understand-a-bull.com/BSL/CDCReport/CDCReport.htm
the CDC states that any percentages with dog bite are inconclusive because it is IMPOSSIBLE to accurately calculate actual dog bites because most dog bites are not reported…so stop trying to google shit that you really dont know anything about please

There is an insurance liability dollar amount for owners of Pitbulls. Bottom line is anything with teeth can bite & no one knows what started this. Blaming the breed is ignorant. Blame the owners. As an owner of this breed, I’m very sick of media & public bashing. Stories like this don’t need to be printed. We should be more concerned about how many pedophiles live in our neighborhoods than pets. Everyone has the right to have whatever pet they choose. A dog is a dog is a dog. Chi’s & Cockers are the most likely to attack someone & Dalmations are the most likely to turn on their owners. Printing only negative things about this breed is not helping anything. There was a story online that a woman was attacked & mauled by her 2 Boston Terriers & no one wanted them banned. Like MrsS said, for every dog that bites, there’s millions that did nothing wrong, stop your ignorance. Pitbulls are good dogs just like any other breed, it’s up to the owner & the way they are treated.

“Pit bulls are good dogs just like any other breed” – no they are not Emily. They are far more likely to be aggressive.
There is no way to insure their owners are not morons so the best solution is to prohibit them from populated areas.

“Everyone has the right to have whatever pet they choose.”

No they don’t. There are plenty of exotic and dangerous breeds that are not legal to own. Pit bulls should be one of them.

I have been bitten by at least 10 dogs in my life. None were pit bulls thank God. Seems like pit bulls once they bite the attack will continue until someone or something stops it. Other dogs bite and then it is over. They don’t try to kill you like pit bulls do. I agree that pit bulls should be banned. And if they aren’t going to do that the owners should have to prove they have insurance in case the dog attacks.

Sorry, this is one too many times we’ve read about a pit bull incident. The breed was bred to fight to the death in a pit fight, thus the name. Pit bulls, and cross bred pits are not suitable pets. Call me names, say it’s the owner and not the dog, do all that until you’re blue in the face. Then when a pit has YOU by the throat, just maybe you’ll believe.

Pit bulls were actually bred as hunting dogs. Maybe know what you’re talking about before you say idiotic things?

For owners of notorius dangerous breeds, there should be a mandate of no less than 3,000,000 dollars of lability insurance posted per animal.
Two types of pitbull, those that have bitten and those that some day will. Sad but true

I agree with hdi, but there needs to be other restrictions. If walking dog(s) in public they must be correctly tagged with the normal city license/rabies, and a special dangerous breed tag as well. The owner or person walking the dog must carry papers of proof of necessary liability insurance. The dog must be muzzled. If any of these conditions are not met the dog should be impounded and the owner has 5 days to rectify the situation or the dog be euthanized.

MrsS states, “Someone on our street got bit by a small dog last week & I have yet to see the story on that. That dog wasn’t euthanized & the victim required stitches”

What don’t you understand about this poor man being torn to shreds by this dog? He almost died. He may still die. Just wait until all the details come out. It won’t be pretty. Isn’t that just a wee bit more serious??

I was told a man driving by witnessed the dog biting the throat of the victim and stabbed the dog with a pocket knife to get the dog to release his grip. Don’t know if that true or not. Any dog regardless of breed should be put down if it seriously injures someone.

This is a non story so lets not get our panties all in a bunch. This was a family matter. Wonder what that means. Secondly the dog was put down. Really… by the family or law enforcement. We need way more facts before valid opionions, either way, are rendered in this matter.

I agree this story should not have been published especially with the crap going on in Manly. No one knows if this man was hitting the dog or anything. I don’t blame dogs for biting people if they are being abused or neglected. This story wouldn’t even be on here if it was a different breed of dog, ridiculous! If it weren’t for the media Pitbulls would just be dogs. I am a proud Pitbull owner & know that every dog can attack someone. Pitbulls are scoring better on temperament tests than most other breeds. If the dog had vaccinations, he/she shouldn’t be automatically euthanized. That’s wrong. Why can’t we euthanize people? There is really no info on what transpired before the dog bit him, so we can’t pass judgment on the breed at all. Bottom line is all dogs are capable of biting & the media needs to either report all dog bites or none at all. Someone on our street got bit by a small dog last week & I have yet to see the story on that. That dog wasn’t euthanized & the victim required stitches. Publishing only bites of one breed is really discrimination & defamation of character for the 10.5 million other dogs of that breed that didn’t do a damn thing wrong. I will always love Pitbulls & all other dogs too. For the ignorant & hateful people with all the negative comments, you’re not worth my time.

Animal lover & Anonymous – the pit bull is an animal, not a person. Quit equating them with people. It is clouding your judgment.
I am for humane treatment but that does not rise to the level of allowing them to enter any environment the owner desires. We have to recognize that some breeds are beyond the ability of some owner’s to control. The public has every right to deny access.

The dog is okay -he had his shots and was put to sleep ???

The dog was not “put to sleep” it was killed. It will never, ever wake up, it is dead. As it should be.

Why would you print this story especially since theres a on going ban issue in Manly? Its too bad that these dogs get a bum rap! Lets BAN BAD OWNERS!!

I can assure you this is not a Jody and Kelly story. They would never jeopardize any animals future!!

Huh?? It sounds like a man was almost killed. Who knows, at his age he still might not survive. You’re okay with that?

Of course Im not OK with that! ANY animal can attack. ITS ALL ABOUT HOW YOU RAISE THEM. WHAT part of THAT dont YOU understand??

And BTW, how do we know if the dog was being hit prior to the attack? WE DONT!

I’m fine with ordinances that would prohibit pit bills within city limits. The owners can have all the good intentions in the world but that will not compensate for the dogs inherent aggressiveness.

We need to ban the owners, not the dogs.

Katie… Before people tried to turn this breed into lap dogs. They were carefully and selectively bred for one thing, to maim and destroy. All pits still carry these genetic markers to varying degrees. All breeds are territorial, and have the potential to be aggressive. The difference between your almost cute ” Chihuahua” point is. They are biters as you stated, but the pit bull breed has been bred to maul and incapacitate the opponent. You will never see a chihuahua make the headlines unless it mauls or kills a baby.

The only difference between the 2 breeds is their size. Some chihuahuas are certainly capable of killing babies. Chihuahuas have been carelessly overbred since the Taco Bell commercials and since models started carrying them as fashion accessories. Plus their owners usually spoil them rotten and do not make them behave. Give me a nice pit bull any day.

my pit protects and loves my child. we brought the baby home in april and got the dog a month later, the same time my mother in law got a chihuahua. my pit has never done anything to harm my child but her chihuahua on several occasions has bite my son and broke the skin, one time even requiring stitches. since then the chihuahua has to be locked up before we go over to visit. my pit would drown the boy in kisses before he did anything else to hurt him; when they play, if my son gets to rough and rowdy, my pit will go in the bedroom, shut the door, and lay behind it so my son cant get in.

Katie…Katie…Katie…The ONLY difference is the results.

Anonymous, what happens when a freind of your son comes over and they start wrestling and playing rough with each other. The pit bull will then go after your son’s friend. Anyone that owns a pit bull is a moron. Its just like leaving a loaded gun layinf around the house.

You’re DAMN RIGHT! Cause that loaded gun might suddenly attack. LMFAO. Only a Moron would make a comment like that. Oh wait, It’s you Happyguy…I didn’t pay attention to the author of that comment until just now. Ok, that explains it. I forgive you. I have never expected much for intelligent comments from retired Fed-Ex Democrats.

my voice, why the attack? Must be because you are one of the moron’s I’m talking about. You probably own a pit bull and also leave a loaded gun laying around the house. Stupid is as stupid does = my voice

Happy, Sorry for the attack. I don’t own a pittbull. I agree with you whole heartedly on that subject. I took offense to the loaded gun comment and moron reference. I keep a loaded gun ON ME and in the house. I can assure you I’m no moron. I have a much higher degree and pay scale than what you held. I know you don’t like guns. But not all gun owners and CCW holders are idiots, morons, or cowboys. Most, like me are just ready and willing to take care of some of the shit in this city should it pose a threat. Anyway, you still have a right to your opinion. Doesn’t make you right tho. Nor does my opinion always make me right. Just most of the time.

MyVoice: As a fellow gun enthusiast and CCW permit holder I hope you will learn some restraint. I am all for gun rights and privileges, however, please realize the loaded gun comment is a very common saying. It is not necessarily an attack on the the 2nd Amendment, you need to examine the context of the saying.

IMHO you do more harm than good when you jump down someone’s throat like that. It makes you appear like the stereotypical gun toting red-neck that people who attack gun rights want the general public to think you are.

My voice, My comment about leaving the gun laying around was directed at Anonymous. She was saying how great pit bulls are with her/his children. What I was trying to say is that you would be a moron to leave a loaded gun laying around the house when you have children there too. My comment was in no way trying to say that responsible gun owners are morons. You are right about my thinking that we need stronger gun controls but my comment wasn’t about that. Sorry if I offended you.

But there is nothing cooler than strolling down the street with my pants falling down, my hat sideways, wearing my wife-beater, my neck tatto, a cigarette dangling from my mouth, while i walk my pitbull on a choke chain.
Everybody knows how cool I am then.

The breed should be Euthanized. Period.

I’d much rather see Chihuahuas banned. They are nasty little unpredictable ankle biters.

I have never seen a Chihuahua rip a child’s throat out.

Katie, you are much more intelligent than this. Don’t be a retard now.

A Chihuahua is no comparison to a Pit.

a citizen- have YOU ever seen a Pit bull rip anyones throat out? My guess is no

Too bad we don’t put dangerous people down as efficiently as we do “dangerous” dogs. That would make this a better place for .sure…

There once was a kindly old woman who was walking after the season’s first snowfall. When she came upon a snake that was barely moving and would soon die. She gathered up the snake in her shawl and took it to her cottage where she set the snake by her warm and glowing fireplace. As it was coming to, she fed it warm milk and the snake soon fully recovered. As she neared the snake to stroke it, it reared and bit her hand. As she lay dying near the snake she asked him, “Why would you do that to me after I showed you nothing but kindness and love?” where the snake replied, “You knew I was a snake when you brought me in.”

I meant Dobby not Dooby. Damn typo’s.

How about a Dobie if you’re talking about a Doberman.

@Katie-yeh, Dobie is what I was looking for. Should have just used Doberman and been done with it. Thanks.

I don’t care what anyone says. These dogs can be very dangerous and you never know what will set them off. I know people who say they are great dogs. My neighbor is one of those. She has two of them and had another that turned on her and she ended up in the emergency room. I really love dogs and had a Dooby that I thought was the best dog in the world, but I never trusted her areound other people. She was just fine as long as I was there but if I wasn’t she would attack when she felt threatened. I would never have one while living in town and especially around kids.
