Two NIACC wrestlers win titles at Simpson

INDIANOLA – NIACC’s Basil Minto and Shakheim Chapman both claimed individual titles at the Simpson College Invitational Saturday.

Minto, a sophomore from Cape Coral, Fla., won the 184-pound title. Chapman, a freshman from Gumee, Ill., won the title at 197 pounds.

Minto edged Wartburg College’s Sam Upah 3-2 in the 184-pound title match. Minto won three matches by decision to advance to the finals.

He topped Grand View’s Christian Mays 4-2, Seth Crane of Concordia, Neb., 4-2 and Wartburg’s Gerard Roman 7-2 to moved to the finals.

It was Minto’s second straight invitational title. He also won the title at the Coe College Invitational on Nov. 17.

Chapman blanked William Penn’s Elson Civilma 2-0 in the 197-pound title match.

Chapman also won three matches to get to the finals. Chapman topped Truman State’s Helmut Rentschler 7-2, Simpson’s Jared Bivins 9-3 and Punahele Soriano of Wartburg 12-6.

Minto and Chapman were the only placewinners for the Trojans, who placed seventh with 72 points. Grand View was the team champion with 223.5 points and Wartburg was second with 158.5 points.

NIACC returns to action Jan. 5 at the William Penn Open.
