MINNEAPOLIS—Late yesterday in federal court, a 29-year-old man was sentenced for his role in several bank robberies in the northern Twin Cities metro area. United States District Court Judge Ann D. Montgomery sentenced William Wellington Williams to 151 months in federal prison on one count of aiding and abetting bank robbery. Judge Montgomery also sentenced him to 24 months in prison, to be served consecutively, for violating the terms of his supervised release relative to a prior bank robbery conviction. Williams, who was indicted along with a co-defendant on May 21, 2012, pleaded guilty on August 3, 2012.
According to a law enforcement affidavit filed in the case, police began investigating Williams because he was identified in surveillance photos from the April 20, 2012 Brooklyn Park TCF Bank branch robbery.
On April 26, 2012, investigators then observed Williams in a vehicle with another man, later identified as co-defendant Kevin Eugene Davis. The men drove to the Cub Foods store at 3245 County Road 10 in Brooklyn Center, where a TCF Bank branch is located. Davis went inside the store, bought an item, and left again. The two men went to a nearby fast-food restaurant, where police saw Williams put on a hooded jacket and baseball cap. The two men later returned to the bank. Williams entered the bank and presented the teller with a demand note that stated, “Put the money in bag now…or die…” The teller complied, giving Williams cash. While Williams was reaching for more money, agents, who were secreted within the bank, arrested him. Davis, who was waiting in the vehicle, was also arrested without incident.
On November 7, 2012, Davis was sentenced to 34 months in federal prison. On July 12, 2012, he had pleaded guilty to one count of aiding and abetting bank robbery.
This case was the result of an investigation by the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the Brooklyn Park Police Department, and the Hennepin County Sheriff’s Office. It was prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Kevin S. Ueland.
