Malloy Garners First Big 12 Award

AMES, Iowa – Iowa State freshman Andie Malloy has been named the Big 12 Rookie of the Week, the league office announced Monday. It is the first weekly award for Malloy and the ninth for the Cyclones (18-7, 11-3 Big 12) this season.

In her first full week in the Cyclones’ starting lineup against Big 12 opponents, Malloy led Iowa State in kills in both its wins over No. 20 Kansas State and Baylor. Malloy tallied a career-high 18 kills on .343 hitting against the Wildcats and added 13 kills against the Bears, the only Cyclone in double-digit kill figures in Waco.

For the week, Malloy averaged 4.43 kills per set and hit .279 while grabbing 2.57 digs per set on defense. The Allen, Texas native’s performance for the week put Iowa State over the top, especially against the Bears in which the Iowa State offense struggled, hitting just .198.

In Iowa State’s last five matches, Malloy, who came off the bench against South Dakota State and Texas Tech before starting against Oklahoma, Kansas State and Baylor, is hitting .272 with 4.07 kills per set, both tops on the team. Malloy also averaged 1.67 digs, served three aces and blocked seven balls during the span.

Iowa State earned its first rookie award the week of Sept. 24 when right side Mackenzie Bigbee was named the top rookie in the Big 12. Junior Kristen Hahn has been named the defensive player of the week seven times this season.

Texas took the other two weekly awards with Haley Eckerman named the top offensive player and Khat Bell taking top defensive honors.

On Wednesday, Malloy and the Cyclones are back on the road at West Virginia (8-20, 0-14 Big 12) for a 5:30 p.m. CST contest.
