Bank Robbery, Shooting Suspects Apprehended Without Incident North of Fredrika, Iowa; Criminal Investigation Continues

Fredrika, Iowa — Tuesday at approximately 6:58 PM, local officers who were working on the perimeter of a search area, arrested two men believed to be the suspects in Tuesday’s Maynard, Iowa bank robbery, pursuit, and shootings.  The men were attempting to escape the search area and evade officers by crossing County Hwy V5C approximately ¾ miles north of Fredrika.  Once spotted by law enforcement, both suspects surrendered without incident.

At approximately 11:13 AM Tuesday a bank robbery was reported at the Maynard Savings Bank in Maynard, Iowa.  Suspect and vehicle information was relayed to area law enforcement with a request to be on the look-out.  A short time later, an area firefighter spotted the suspect vehicle.  Other law enforcement arrived shortly thereafter and a pursuit ensued.  The pursuit traveled across county roads from Fayette County into Bremer County.  Throughout the pursuit, the two white male suspects repeatedly fired shots at the pursuing vehicles and two officers were shot and injured:

  • Trooper Mark Domino from the Iowa State Patrol was shot in the arm.  He was transported to an area hospital, treated and released.
  • Chief Dennis Cain of the Sumner Police Department was shot in the hand, thumb, and neck.  He was transported by life flight to an eastern Iowa hospital.  He has undergone surgery and remains in critical, but stable condition.

At approximately 12:20 PM, the two suspects abandoned their vehicle near the Heartland Quarry along Midway Avenue, west of Fredrika, Iowa.  The pair fled on foot into a wooded area nearby.  At that time law enforcement established a two-mile long perimeter to ensure the suspects could not travel outside of the immediate area.

Throughout the remainder of the afternoon and evening, law enforcement from more than 16 federal, state, county, and local agencies worked to search and clear the area north and west of Fredrika until the suspects were taken into by Waterloo Police officers working the perimeter shortly before 7:00 PM.

An investigation into the bank robbery, pursuit, shootings, and subsequent search will be conducted by the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation, including interviews of the suspects and involved officers.

Many agencies contributed to the successful and safe conclusion of this incident, including the Federal Bureau of Investigation, US Marshal’s Office, Iowa Department of Public Safety, Department of Natural Resources, Department of Transportation, Department of Homeland Security and Emergency Management, Minnesota State Patrol, Bremer County Sheriff’s Office, Chickasaw County Sheriff’s Office, Winneshiek Sheriff’s Office, Fayette County Sheriff’s Office, Black Hawk County Sheriff’s Office, Mitchell County Sheriff’s Office, Buchanan County Sheriff’s Office, Readlyn Police Department, Waverly Police Department, Sumner Police Department, Waterloo Police Department, Oelwein Police Department, Janesville EMS, Frederika Fire Department and First Responders.
