UPDATED: Schools, police took steps to protect children after home invasion

Mason City School Administration Building at 15th Street and South Penn Ave., located between Roosevelt Elementary and Lincoln Intermediate schools.

MASON CITY -Mason City police and school officials took steps Thursday to protect children in schools after a nearby home invasion.

After several people people were on the run after invading a home on 12th Street SE Thursday morning at about 9:20 AM, Mason City police alerted Mason City school officials to a potential danger and to “lock down” Roosevelt and Lincoln schools, both located only about three blocks away.

According to School Superintendent Anita Micich, “Yesterday we were notified by Mason City Police that we needed to lock down our buildings on Pennsylvania and 15th street due to a ‘home invasion’ situation in the neighborhood to ensure that our children would be secure.   This involved the Administration Center, Roosevelt Elementary and Lincoln Intermediate.  We acted at the direction of the police.  This situation was not connected with our schools.”

This is called a “code red” by the school district.

Mason City police officer Mike McKelvey informed Friday morning that “3 suspects, one of whom was armed with a shotgun, ran towards Roosevelt School. As a precautionary measure, I immediately contacted MC school administration and alerted them of the situation and recommended a temporary lockdown until we had a chance to search the area. School admin staff were very supportive and worked with us quickly to ensure the safety of their students and staff during our nearby investigation. I made the call to school admin around the time of the initial report and then updated school admin as our investigation progressed. Once we had the last suspect in custody and were confident there were no other suspects at large, I contacted school admin and the lockdown was lifted. All defendants were arrested on 12th ST SE or north of 12th ST SE (in downtown area). No suspect was in or on school property.”

Concerned citizen sounds like drama queen or(king) settle down,MCPD had under control B4 you could of got too school to get your kid.And I do have kids and grandkids of my own.

I am proud of the MCPD for their action and quick apprehension of these people. They did what they should to keep everyone safe in this situation. Roosevelt acted properly too to keep children, staff and teachers safe.

Thank you MCPD!

Damn Southend

YA! DAMN NORTH END scum leaching it’s way out of the DAMN NORTH END and coming to the south end. They need to stay up there. We don’t want them here!

Imagine the public outcry and media coverage if this were to have happened on the Northend. Guarantee headlines would be “Children’s Safety in Question on the Northend” within an hour of it happening. Interesting!

All four of these scumbags are from………you guessed it the North End.

North enders venture to southern end guns in hand?

Excellent action in regard to the mason city police department. However, I am extremely disappointed in the lack of information given as a parent of a child at Lincoln intermediate. My child came home and told me there was a man with a gun running toward or in the school. I have yet to receive any explanation from the principal or school system.

What explanation do you want? The MCPD informed the school of the situation, and the school did exactly what needed to be done. Why do you feel you need any explanation?

@anonymous You obviously do not have kids. I would like for the school to inform me when my kids are huddled and hiding behind whiteboards with teachers acting as human shields and covering all classroom windows in fear of an armed intruder. At least they could email me with an explanation so I am prepared for our conversation after school.

The officers did a fine job informing/protecting those schools, not to mention the citizens. The teachers did what they were told to do after being informed, and one of them is protecting/shielding those kids, that’s their job. What exactly is your problem? Are you upset that the teachers didn’t stop what they were doing to give you a call of the situation so you could run down there in panic and pull your kid? Because yeah that’s all the officers need was a distraught parent to look after also. I listened to the whole thing unfold on the scanner and those officers had the criminals under control less than 10 min.
THANK YOU MCPD!

Sounds to me like this is turning into a fish story by Concerned Citizen. So the students were huddled behind whiteboards and the teachers were acting as human shields? What storybook did this come from? The students were never in any fear of being hurt. Did you not read the article? 3 more of Mason City’s finest went into a home. They didn’t rush the school and take students hostages. What do you want the Lincoln administration to do for crying out loud. Everyone did their job and the day continued on like nothing ever happened. Take a pill.

I don’t know where you were getting your info from but the kids weren’t huddled behind whiteboards with teachers as shields. My 5th grader told me all about it when she got home from school. They had a “code red”. All door were locked (which already occurs on a daily basis, except for the main entrance) They were to stay away from windows. Her classroom went to the gym and was there for 15-20 min. Get your story straight before you start spewing your misinformation.

P.S. Great job MCPD and Lincoln Intermediate for keeping our kids safe!!!

Good job by all.
