KEOSAUQUA – A Van Buren County sheriff’s deputy fatally shot a man Tuesday after he pointed a gun at deputies along Iowa 2 east of Cantril.
According to a brief statement released by the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation, Van Buren County dispatchers received numerous 911 calls about noon Tuesday concerning a man acting strange along the roadway.
Citizens told dispatchers a “male subject wearing a military uniform and armed with a rifle” was walking westbound along Iowa 2. They said the man was making obscene gestures at passing motorists.
“When deputies arrived at the subject’s location, the man was ordered to drop his firearm,” according to police reports. “At that time, the subject pointed the firearm at the deputies. Due to the subject’s actions, he was fatally shot by one of the responding sheriff’s deputies.”
Authorities did not release the dead man’s name, pending notification of family members.
The deputy involved in the shooting is being investigated by the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation, according to Special Agent Jeff Uhlmeyer, who is assigned to the DCI’s Mount Pleasant office.
