Cyclones Suffer 4-1 Setback At Kansas

LAWRENCE, Kan. – Iowa State junior Jennifer Dominguez moved into second place in season goals with her 14th of the season Friday, but the Cyclones fell to Kansas 4-1 at the Jayhawk Soccer Complex in a match that had three penalty kicks.

Dominguez’s goal was her seventh in her last four matches and put her behind only Jo Hinks’ season output of 18 from 1997 in the all-time leader board.  Dominguez has 28 points this season, a mark that puts her in a tie for third with Jun Shen (1997) in program history.

Iowa State (10-8 overall, 1-5 Big 12) had a 20-18 shots in the match and also had all 11 corner kicks.

Dominguez found the back of the net at the 74:56 mark off a header.  Brittany Morgan provided the assist on the goal, her third assist in her last two matches.

The Cyclones had a chance to cut into Kansas’ 4-1 lead in the 80th minute when they were awarded a penalty kick.  However, Theresa Kucera was unable to convert the chance.

Junior goalkeeper Maddie Jobe made an important intervention in the 26th minute when she saved a penalty kick from Kansas’ Whitney Berry.

Any momentum gained from Jobe’s penalty kick save was short lived, as the Jayhawks scored moments later off the foot of Courtney Dickerson 26:44 into the match. Amy Grow earned the assist for Kansas. The Jayhawks doubled their advantage at the 29:19 mark off an unassisted goal from Caroline Kastor.

The score remained 2-0 at the half.  Iowa State held an edge on corner kicks (4-0), and Kansas had a 9-3 advantage in shots.

Berry would get a second crack at a penalty kick six minutes into the second half, and she would not be stopped again to move the Jayhawks’ lead to 3-0.

Kansas scored its final goal of the match in the 69th minute off a goal from Nicole Chrisopulos.  Berry provided the assist on the goal.

The Cyclones travel to Waco, Texas, for their next match.  Iowa State will face No. 20 Baylor Sunday at 1 p.m. at the Betty Lou Mays Soccer Field.
