Railroad bridge to be torn down and replaced; South Pierce closed

This railroad bridge just west of South Pierce Avenue in Mason City will soon be replaced by a concrete bridge.

MASON CITY – A contractor working for the Canadian Pacific Railroad will be replacing a railroad bridge near South Pierce Avenue. Due to the location of the bridge and its proximity to the traveled portion of the roadway South Pierce Avenue will be closed to traffic between 9th Street SW and 15th Street SW. The closure will begin effective Wednesday, October 17th and is expected to remain closed for approximately 6 weeks.

There will be a detour in place throughout the duration of this project. The detour for South Pierce Avenue is as follows:

Southbound South Pierce Avenue traffic will follow a route east on Hwy 122 to US 65/ Federal Avenue, then south to 19th Street SW, then west to South Pierce Avenue.

Northbound South Pierce Avenue traffic will follow a route east on 19th Street SW to US 65/ Federal Avenue, then north to Hwy 122, then west to South Pierce Avenue.

Motorists are asked to follow the detour or find alternative routes. Also, for the safety of motorists and construction personnel do not drive around barricades to enter the construction zone.

A contractor on the scene Tuesday said the project will “take a few weeks” and that the new bridge will be mostly concrete.
