ISU Women XC Win adidas Title; Men 16th

MADISON, Wis. – Iowa State’s Betsy Saina and Meaghan Nelson placed second and fourth respectively, in a field of 323 runners from 48 teams to pace the Cyclone women’s cross country team to a runaway team title Friday at the Wisconsin adidas Invitational on the Thomas Zimmer Cross Country Course. Iowa State won the women’s 6,000-meter race with 106 points. Stanford was second with 181 points. The Iowa State men finished 16th in a field of 45 teams and 316 runners. The Cyclone men had 487 points. Stanford won the men’s team crown with 135 points. The men’s race was 8,000 meters.

“Both teams did a really nice job today,” Iowa State coach Corey Ihmels said. “The women ran aggressively and we talked about doing that before the race. This was a dress rehearsal for the NCAA meet and we treated it that way. They handled the pressure of expectations and a big crowd.”

The Iowa State women were ranked fifth nationally coming into the meet but bested No. 7 Stanford (2nd-181 points), No. 2 Arizona (3rd-242 points), No. 3 Washington (4th-252 points), No. 9 Cornell (5th-264 points) and No. 10 Michigan State (9th-420 points) among others.

Saina ended up second to Cal-Poly’s Laura Hollander, who won the individual crown in 19:33. Saina finished in 19:35 followed by Weber State’s Amber Henry (19:43) and Nelson (19:45). Saina and Nelson are seniors. It was a team effort. Iowa State freshman Crystal Nelson was 26th (20:10), junior Samantha Bluske was 30th (20:14), sophomore Katy Moen was 47th (20:27), senior Taylor Petersen was 139th (21:01) and junior Bethany Olson 225th (21:33) for the Cyclones.

The Iowa State men, who were not ranked in the top 30 heading into the meet, finished just ahead of No. 1-rated host Wisconsin (17th-489 points), No. 24 Georgia (18th-505 points), No. 16 Minnesota (22nd- 542 points) No. 13 Notre Dame (26th-615 points), No. 29 Virginia (27th-639 points) and No. 30 Missouri (31st-674 points).

“We had nine guys run under 25 minutes for 8k and we beat several ranks teams,” Ihmels said. “I think we’ll be ranked now and I think this group of men is still sorting itself out. The future is promising.”

Sophomore Alex Dillenbeck led the Iowa State men with a 41st-place finish (23:58), followed by junior Mohamed Hrezi, who placed 50th in 24:01. Sophomore Edwin Serem was 106th (24:18), senior Charlie Paul was 141st (24:28), sophomore Josh Hietkamp 149th (24:29), sophomore Edward Kemboi 164th (24:34) and junior Falko Zauber 182nd (24:38).
