Harkin Announces $3.1 Million Grant to Boost Program Integrity, Performance of Unemployment Insurance Program in Iowa

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Senator Tom Harkin (D-IA) last week announced that the U.S. Department of Labor (DOL) has awarded $3,106,967 to Iowa for Unemployment Insurance (UI) program integrity and performance. The grant will support the integrity of the UI program through the prevention, detection and recovery of improper UI benefit payments. DOL awarded funding to support a number of initiatives that will strengthen the UI system in 30 States, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands.

Harkin helped secure funding for the UI program integrity activities as chairman of the Senate Appropriations panel that funds DOL. He is also chairman of the Senate Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions Committee.

“For those who are unemployed, this assistance is a lifeline. It allows families to pay bills and put food on the table until they find new employment,” said Harkin. “Maintaining an efficient unemployment insurance system is crucial to ensure the integrity of the program and that it is there for those who have earned this assistance.”

So, is what most of you posters are saying is that finding fraud in the unemployment benefits program a bad thing? Then, you all must be some of those people that are illegally getting benefits from our government. “It’s all ok until they start going after me” seems to be your motto.

The way these guys throw all this money around and spend, spend, spend is so irresponsible. It makes our nation more insecure and people need to get to the voting booth to vote for people that want it stopped.

This is the only time you see Harkin’s face. When it’s election time for democrats, Tommy boy is handing out money like candy at Halloween!!

I think I saw him on TV standing behind the President signing the healthcare bill. I’ve never seen him in Iowa and I don’t get to the Bahamas much.

He is the guy that got caught sun bathing with Nancy Pelosi in the Bahamas. They were enjoying a Obama beer.

This is one program I’d volunteer to work for part-time from home. This and detecting welfare fraud. I bet there are a lot of retired clerical people who would volunteer to work part time in fraud services for the government!

If she is white she is a minority now. Were out numbered. Let’s all go sign up for welfare and food stamps. Oh I forgot a free cell phone.

Tommy Bahama fritters away more of our tax money. Then laughs about it from his million dollar home in the bahamas.
But he’s a democrat, so you’ll vote for him.

I am almost 80 and I have been preaching for years that they should live and play by the same rules, but this ain’t gonna happen untill all of the people get out and vote….JR

He will borrow the money from China or have Ben Bernanke, the Federal Reserve Chairman start printing more money to pay for this.

While the US burns he will watch from the Bahamas!

I got a idea Tommy. Why don’t you sell you farm to pay for this. That way you could spend 12 months in the Bahamas. And not have to come back and spend more of the taxpayers money.

Does anyone else find it interesting that this announcement comes now as the November election is rapidly approaching? My observation is made not as a Democrat or Republican, but merely as an armchair observer.

I agree with this statement. just think what we could save if we put them on Social Security and made them take the same Health Insurance as the rest of us. I would bet there would be a lot less of them running.

I, too, agree. And think of the money we could save if we limited the length of time anyone could spend running for office. We could learn from the Brits who have a very short campaign season. With the availability of various media there is no reason for candidates to spend time and money on trips to various parts of the country over and over again. This would end if we did not give them so much time to campaign.

We already have the term limits you mentioned. They are called elections.

Why can the president only serve two terms and everyone else can serve as many terms as they can. I bet you are trying to change this unfair law.
