Iowa State Volleyball Downs Baylor In Big 12 Opener

AMES, Iowa – No. 19 Iowa State (7-4, 1-0 Big 12) hit .326 and had four players with double-digit kills in a four-set victory (25-15, 25-20, 23-25, 25-17) over Baylor (13-3, 0-1 Big 12) in its Big 12 opener Saturday night in Hilton Coliseum.

Mackenzie Bigbee tallied 18 kills (.424) followed by Victoria Hurtt with 14 kills (.444). Rachel Hockaday had 12 kills and 12 digs, her sixth double-double of the season, to aid the Cyclones in victory.

“We had three pretty good sets and one not so good set,” said Iowa State coach Christy Johnson-Lynch. “I think we’re finding out that when we’re passing and playing defense, we’re pretty good. That was the best Victoria Hurtt has played this year and it’s really good to see her gaining confidence.”

Iowa State and Baylor were tied at 13-13 in the fourth set until the Cyclones took control with four-straight points. Hockaday and Jamie Straube each had a kill in the run. Straube had four kills and Hurtt tallied five kills in the fourth stanza.

The first set was all Iowa State, as the Cyclones hit .633 to capture the opener, 25-15. Iowa State led 17-12 and then rattled off eight of the next 11 points. Bigbee had the hot hand, registering eight kills on 10 attempts with no errors.

Iowa State was clinging to a 20-19 lead in the second set until scoring four-straight points to take control at 24-19. Bigbee, Hockaday and Alison Landwehr had three consecutive kills followed by an ace from Jenelle Hudson to pace the Cyclones to a 25-20 second-set victory. ISU hit .314 percent and held the Bears to a .088 hitting percentage.

The Bears battled back to take the third set, 25-23. The set was tied at 22-22, but Hudson was charged with a service error followed by an attack error from Hockaday to give the Bears the cushion it needed at 24-22. Iowa State hit .140 in the third set.

Landwehr ended the match with 56 assists, three shy of her season high of 59 she had vs. Illinois. Kristen Hahn posted 25 digs. She has 51 digs in her last two matches.

The Cyclones are back in action Wednesday night at Kansas. First serve is at 6:30 p.m.
