Paul Ryan booed over Medicare at AARP convention

By Lisa Mascaro, Tribune Washington Bureau –

WASHINGTON — Mitt Romney’s vice presidential nominee Paul Ryan was booed at the annual AARP convention after saying their Republican administration would repeal the nation’s new health care law as the best way to save Medicare.

Just five minutes into his talk at the gathering of the powerful 50-and-older lobby on Friday, the architect of the Republican proposal to change Medicare for the next generation of seniors  was repeatedly interrupted at he criticized President Barack Obama’s health care law.

“The first step to a stronger Medicare is to repeal Obamacare, because it represents the worst of both worlds,” Ryan said as the crowd in New Orleans booed audibly.

“I had a feeling there’d be mixed reaction,” Ryan acknowledged, pausing briefly. “So let me get into it.”

But Ryan only drew further objections from the crowd as he provided a more detailed explanation for his criticism of the new health care law.

When he suggested that Obama was cutting $716 billion from Medicare over the next decade to pay for the costs of insuring more Americans under the health care law, those gathered booed. Ryan’s own budget relies on using the same savings from Medicare, but he applies it to paying down the nation’s deficit.

Ryan also elicited a round of objections when he suggested that the health care law “weakens Medicare for today’s seniors and puts it at risk for the next generation.” The health care law reduces spending on Medicare payments to providers, which officials have said would add eight years to the program’s solvency, though it is still expected run out of money by 2024.

Seniors have provided a healthy constituency for Republicans, with promises of low taxes and conservative views on many social issues, but the Romney-Ryan approach to Medicare has drawn sharp divisions. Polls show most Americans want to keep Medicare as is.

Under the Republican approach to Medicare, the next generation of seniors, those now 55 years old and younger, would be given a fixed stipend to buy health insurance.

While Republicans say health costs would be driven down by forcing competition among insurers offering policies, critics say there is no guarantee the voucher from the government — or premium support — would be worth enough for seniors who still want to opt for Medicare. Nonpartisan analysts say seniors could pay as much as $2,000 a year out of pocket to make up the difference. The Republican proposal requires that the stipend be set at the lowest-priced insurance policy, which may not be Medicare.

“We respect you enough to level with you,” Ryan told the crowd as he began the 30-minute address, and he did draw some applause as he outlined the approach a Republican would take.

As he often does, Ryan mentioned that his mother, Betty, a senior on Medicare from Florida, was campaigning with him Friday, and that his goal is to preserve the popular health safety net not only for this generation, but that of his three young children.

A jab at the health care law’s new independent patient advisory board, which is being formed to devise ways to keep rising health care costs down, drew approval.

“To save Medicare for future generations, we propose putting 50 million seniors, not 15 unaccountable bureaucrats, in charge of their own health care decisions,” Ryan said, drawing applause.

The talk by the GOP vice presidential nominee followed a video appearance by Obama.

Both candidates made the appearance amid a day of campaigning, with Ryan headed next to the senior-rich swing state of Florida.

Brietbart news Tues on British patients on the National Health Service asking doctors for private treatment options because of public rationing by the NHS which makes many patients ineligible for “free” care.
Non-emergency procedures affected by rationing included “cataract removals, hernia operations and hip and knee replacements.”

Your imagined utopia for healthcare is BS. Thanks for helping ruin our healthcare system while assisting in raising our taxes.

The $716 billion that Ryan is taking about, does not affect Medicare recipients, but reduces payments to hospitals, health insurance plans and otherservice providers, a change that actually strengthened Medicare and extended its solvency until 2024.!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Iam guessing it affects the BIG supporters of Romney/Ryan.

I guess repeating what you hear is the way to go, no matter if it is true or not.

I’m guessing you really believe that, and are not just being sarcastic. I guess that’s what makes you a Teabagger.

Facts don’t matter to zealots.

wow wow wow dude…im THE REAL RANDY since this website took off.. GET A NEW NAME your making me look bad cuz they think your me #romney2012

AARP has come out in Obama’s corner for one reason…if the Paul Ryan idea were inacted (and there is no guarantee that it will be)for the under 55 crowd, their supplement insurance would not be needed and there goes their income!!! Nonetheless, if those under 55 choose to stay on the Medicare plan as it is, they can do so. No one of the other side wants to tell that story.

Anything that comes out of Obama care comes with a price. Why do these people think they are getting something for nothing. Somewhere, somehow, someone must pay for it and it will be the middleclass. You have to be blind and ignorant not to see that.

What part of Obamacare dont you like???????????
Dependents 26 or younger can remain on there parentshealth insurance.
You can not be denied insurance for a pre-existing health condition.
No lifetime limiits on insurance coverage.
Insurance companys are forced to spend 80%-85%of the premiums on medical care.
Seniors are provided free preventative care and wellness benefits.
Seniors have saved $3.7 billion on prescription drugs since the law was enacted.
You cannot lose coverage no matter how sick you are or how much the insurance has paid for the care.
Small business in 2014 will receive tax credits for 50% of there insurance premium cost.

My neighbor payed into AARP all his life. When he did finally need some help from them. They told him to get lost.

I had a AARP Supplemental Heath Insurance policy for over 10 years and never collected one penny. When I lost my insurance and tried to change to a full health insurance policy they cancelled me for pre-existing (diabetis). I went for 4 years with no insurance. Couldn’t buy it at any costs. Then I find out just how far left they are and will have nothing to do with them.

yet an other example of why we need “ObamaCare”

Can you say ignorant? Obamacare will be the worse thing that could happen to this country. Sure some of it looks good on the surface but underneith it will drive us to ruin.

Let’s all thank happyguy for wanting our taxes to go up with Obamacare. Thanks so much.

Stop blaming Obama for the way AARP treated you! There’s no connection!

LVS, don’t you realize Obamacare would have prevented you from being denied health insurance due to a pre-existing condition? But you would never admit that, would you? If you lived in Massachusetts and were covered under Romneycare you’d be praising Romney. You do realize that Obamacare is almost identical to Romneycare?

Obamacare is NOT a tax. It will SAVE us money in the long run, not cost us. Aren’t you tired of paying for all the people who don’t have health insurance? I sure am!

Some of you people would complain if Obama announced today that ALL healthcare for EVERYONE in this country was now free. You would complain because some people aren’t as healthy as you and they would be using the free healthcare far more often than you. Instead, you should be thankful for your good health!

Then you are the only one thinking it’s not a tax because the supreme court says it is.

maybe, the part that the SC called a tax was the penalty you pay if you fail to have health insurance by 2014. The way I see it that is only fair. Why should I pay for your free treatment at the ER because you don’t want to buy insurance. I would think that as a republican you would be up in arms over paying someones elses doctor bills, as we do now. The Teapublicans are putting the cart in front of the horse on this issue. It won’t be in full effect until 2014. Give it a chance. I think over time there will be items added and taken off. There will be a change here and there and it will become a great law. The only reason the Teapublicans are so deathly opposed to it is because it a law that came out under Pres. Obama and you all know because he likes it you can’t.

Happyguy people talk about religious zealouts….you are a progressive zealot. Liberalism is your religion no amount of facts or reasoning affects you because you HAVE to believe in this utopia you imagine. Well thanks for making the middle class have to pay MORE taxes. Really appreciate it.

This guy is so much smarter than Peter Children he can’t begin to understand what Ryan is even talking about. People who want something for nothing want Obama care and don’t care what it does to other people. I dropped my AARP years ago when I figured out they are a far left communists organization. They do not and will not ever speak for me. AARP memberships are for weak minded people.

I wonder if they will let us sue Obamacare doctors when they screw up. You know how you can’t sue VA doctors…..

Compare what this government gives to business and what the communists give to business. We are a socialist country and have been for fifty years. Free enterprise and capitolism is a myth. If business stopped getting free money from the government our economy would implode. You probably took government money from people when you ripped them off on that siding you sold them.

There are so many businesses that don’t get money from the govt. You are making so much up. Are the majority of especially small businesses getting money from the govt? You are on crack.

Crack is bad@ Have you ever heard of the Small Businesss Administration? The SBA has a budget of 985 million dollars giving grants and low interest loans to small business. SusieQ, Ransoms and other small businesses right here in MC are receiving thousands of dollars in taxpayer funded money. Even if I was on crack it wouldn’t be hard to out smart you dimwit!

put me in that group of never buying from AARP

AARP is for Socialist/Communist folks!

WILL NEVER BUY AARP MEMBERSHIP !

NEVER NEVER NEVER !

When I need supplemental insurance, I will buy it from anyone other than AARP.

This guy is a real nightmare; as real as it gets. God won’t let him hurt the people who live in this country, mark my words.

This guy appears to be cream of the crop. Work ethic that would be hard to surpass. Quit lying. Go to Russia if you like that kind of life and be more proud of you country.
