Crumbling building to be protected by barricades

Debris has already fallen from the side of 514 South Federal Avenue onto the parking lot below.

MASON CITY – A crumbling building on South Federal Avenue in Mason City may be a safety hazard and city officials are acting Thursday to correct the situation.

An NIT reader alerted the public to the situation at 514 South Federal Avenue, formerly a Pizza Hut Delivery business.  The north side of the building is peeling away and chunks are falling to the ground below.

“Can the city please cleanup the mess in the parking area next to the Old Pizza Hut Delivery,” the NIT reader posted in the NIT Whiner’s Den.  “Someone is gonna get hurt from falling bricks.”

A contact was made to Neighborhood Services Manager Pat Otto, who promptly let NIT know that her team was taking care of the situation.

“The owner (listed in online records as TIERNEY HOLDINGS LLC) has been contacted and proper barricades will be set up this afternoon around the north side of the property to keep pedestrians out of harms way until appropriate repairs can be made.

Until the barricades are up, either do not park on the north side of the building, or wear a hard hat and make sure your insurance is up to date.

NIT will check later to see if barricades or any other corrective measures were taken.
