Op-ed: Solution for Mercy and Forest Park (by Peter Children)

I have a solution for both the Mercy Hospital and the homeowners who will be effected by the new generator facility. The homeowners have to realize that the Mercy will get it’s way…they always get their way.

Money is not and never has been a problem for Mercy; this then is something I think would be fair. (1) The homeowners hire an accredited appraiser to determine the value of the properties as they now sit before any construction begins. Or if it is agreeable just use the original price paid by each homeowner if the home was purchased within the past three years. If it was purchased years ago then use current value as a measure. (2) Next get the same appraiser to give a fair projection of the value after the generators are up and running. The value will drop considerably. At that point the Mercy should write a check to each homeowner for the difference. (3) The Mercy should then pick up the entire property tax bill on each home as long as the current owner resides in the home.

The Mercy will undoubtedly be the buyer on each of those houses at some point; their facility will have driven down the value and an outside appraiser will determine what is fair. The Mercy should pick an appraiser, the homeowner should pick an appraiser then those two should agree on a third appraiser. Then it would be fair.

If each homeowner were to bring a legal action against the hospital, it would not only shine the spotlight on this “holy place with all the statues and religious trappings,” but it would then also drag on for what could be years. The hospital doesn’t want that, they want it over with.

Everyone knows this council will pass whatever the Mercy wants; they are all without a spine…….
