Op-ed: Solution for Mercy and Forest Park (by Peter Children)

I have a solution for both the Mercy Hospital and the homeowners who will be effected by the new generator facility. The homeowners have to realize that the Mercy will get it’s way…they always get their way.

Money is not and never has been a problem for Mercy; this then is something I think would be fair. (1) The homeowners hire an accredited appraiser to determine the value of the properties as they now sit before any construction begins. Or if it is agreeable just use the original price paid by each homeowner if the home was purchased within the past three years. If it was purchased years ago then use current value as a measure. (2) Next get the same appraiser to give a fair projection of the value after the generators are up and running. The value will drop considerably. At that point the Mercy should write a check to each homeowner for the difference. (3) The Mercy should then pick up the entire property tax bill on each home as long as the current owner resides in the home.

The Mercy will undoubtedly be the buyer on each of those houses at some point; their facility will have driven down the value and an outside appraiser will determine what is fair. The Mercy should pick an appraiser, the homeowner should pick an appraiser then those two should agree on a third appraiser. Then it would be fair.

If each homeowner were to bring a legal action against the hospital, it would not only shine the spotlight on this “holy place with all the statues and religious trappings,” but it would then also drag on for what could be years. The hospital doesn’t want that, they want it over with.

Everyone knows this council will pass whatever the Mercy wants; they are all without a spine…….

Peter.why don,t you just buy Mercy? you have all the answers all the time. You have been a big shot businessman. you are an admitted whore monger. Certainly you could screw everyone and write a bog to brag about it to.

When they built the new ER they didn’t get a loan, these people pay cash, would to you think they ring up a day in there?

It’s over, the council will pass it once more this tues. night.

I do not agree with all the Mercy haters out there. Yes, Mayo is one of the better hospitals in the world, but, Mercy does it’s job pretty well. I just do not believe that all the people who work there are not qualified or do not care about the people they treat. Medicine is not tried and true, it is more trial and error based and always has been. The people we have seen there are friendly and professional. Are there bad doctors and nurses there, certainly, but they are by far not the majority. The majority are caring dedicated professionals who do their best. Believe me when I say I have reason to be bitter about Mercy but using intelligence I am not.

We live 90 minutes from the finest health care facility in the world; why would you go here? Your odds are better at Diamond Joe’s.

“holy place with all the statues and religious trappings,”
Pete, how dare you ridicule another religion. I bet your own orthodoxy has the same icons and religious trappings. Unless you’re an atheist, you had better not throw stones.

Katie I was only referring to the old adage; “what you see isn’t always what you get.”

Pete, You’re wrong. They have budgets just like any entity. They were behind on technology for mammograms until 2 years ago when they finally spent a small fortune to buy digital x-ray machines for it. I was about to go elsewhere to have mine done because they were behind the times. The machines cost at least $250,000 each and I believe they needed 3 of them. Also, they bought houses and land for parking because that was cheaper than a ramp. The current rule of thumb estimate for a parking place in a ramp is $25,000 per spot. They do not get whatever they desire whenever they desire it. And Mercy in Sioux City is not a swanky place. Parts of it need repairs. And think about all the patients who never pay them a cent or go bankrupt because they can’t pay them.

Children is a hypocrit. You know what you meant by the “trappings” comment. “old adage” indeed.

i agree with Peter on this and the other comment about Mercy having money when they need it but telling employees they don’t have money for them how sweet it all works out for mercy

This would be possible if the people who lived in the houses owned them, but Mercy owns these houses. They don’t care that people actually live in them and have to go through the hassle of finding another place to live and having to move. I can only hope they move out of Mason City.

If they do not own them, why did they line up at the last council meeting to complain about property values?

Geez, come on Children. R you that blind? The ones lined up are the ones who will be neighbors to the plant, shipping area, etc. Mercy might own the houses that will be moved but they don’t own everything involved.

I like your comment “Money is not and never has been a problem for Mercy” because that is not the message they are telling their employees

When the healthcare program goes into effect their profits will explode so never fear they will have lots of money.

They already have the money; they own 18 hospitals and most of them are larger than this one.
