Bill Sperfslage, Deputy Warden of the Anamosa State Penitentiary, has been selected as the 2012 Deputy Warden of the Year by the United States Deputy Warden’s Association.
Sperfslage began his corrections career in 1979 as a correctional officer with the Iowa Department of Corrections, and worked his way up through the ranks to Deputy Warden, a position he has held since November 2000. Among his achievements, Sperfslage is a charter member of the department’s Security Threat Group Steering Committee, regularly conducts training on this topic, and is well-known to many agencies for his work in this field.
The United States Deputy Warden’s Association notes: “When you think of the leadership principles most valued in Corrections, Bill Sperfslage is the example for others to follow. He encourages others to ‘model the way’ but he also lives this principle daily. Bill has no expectation for one of his employees that he doesn’t also have for himself. He holds himself to high standards and expects the same for his employees. These expectations help promote others to strive for being the best for themselves and the organization.”

William Sperfslage was a pathetic excuse for a warden. He had no control over his staff. He allowed them to rape inmates. Just a few were asked to resign in order to face no criminal charges. That included clergy, teachers, kitchen staff, counselors, and correctional officers.
How can this sorry excuse for a man win an award for his duties that were utterly pathetic. They must not have considered the escape attempts that were almost successful while he was Security Director. Inmates had dug a tunnel under Living Unit C for almost a year before an inmate snitched on the inmates digging the tunnel. Prison staff members were involved because money, street clothing, lighting equipment, extension cords and weapons were found in this tunnel. Don’t forget the out-of-control staff under the authority of Bill. Officer Kelly ? was caught conducting oral sex on inmates while they chugged won bottled liquor she smuggled into the prison. Officer Glenda G. was caught doing it doggy-style with an inmate in he walk-in freezer in the kitchen. This escapade led to her pregnancy. How about the teachers who were caught in sexual acts with inmates? All staff members were allowed to resign without criminal charges filed against them. The prison gave their criminal staff members immunity from prosecution in order to avoid word of these criminal acts being released to the public. No staff member at the Anamosa State Penitentiary gave any respect to William Sperfslage.
William Sperfslage is the most corrupt, wicked, criminal employee in the Iowa Department of Corrections. While he was security director there were many prison escape attempts. In Living Unit C inmates dug a tunnel for almost a year. His staff was involved because found cash, street clothing, money and firearms in the tunnel. Teachers were allowed to resign after being caught in sexual acts with inmates. A female officer working in the kitchen was caught smuggling bottles of liquor into prison. She gave this to inmates in exchange for them allowing her to conduct oral sex on them while they drank. She was allowed to resign. A counselor was caught having sex with inmates in her office. A female staff member was impregnated by an inmate. The list goes on and one. If William Sperfslage was such a great assistant warden, why were his staff committing criminal acts? William Sperfslage is the most pathetic individual in the Iowa Department of Corrections. His staff controls him.
Wasn’t Bill married? His wife was unfaithful to him, as he was unfaithful to the institution. Bill was amazing to me but his other side should be revealed and his positive response. Corrections individuals, male and female, employed and/or spouse, should be shown as humans. Bill, you have my support.

William Sperfslage was a very weak leader who had absolutely no control over his criminal staff in Iowa’s largest male prison. I witnessed many staff members conducting sexual acts with inmates. Bill even took part in covering up Officer Glenda Glasgow’s becoming impregnated by the inmate she raped. Bill Sperfslage deserves to be spending the rest of his life behind bars.
I still find it a very demented career path to want to choose. I mean what kind of human says to themselves “I want to guard bad men in a cage for the rest of my life” ?? I believe you’d have to be somewhat sado masochistic to want to get into prison official work. It’s probably rooted in a need to control and exert authority over someone or something. Bizarre and disturbing to me.
While incarcerated at the Anamosa State Penitentiary the Treatment Director was a flaming homosexual. I am in no way homophobic, but Steve Hebron was a corrupt prison official who was overpaid like all the other corrupt prison officials.
Mr. Sperfslage is a corrupt prison official. He made false reports on inmates that added time to their prison sentences. He ignored officers assaulting disabled inmates, and ignored the dozen fights of Toby Michael, an inmate who served every day of his 5-year sentence. Mr. Michael discharged without any treatment and stabbed 3-people at a “Dahl” grocery store in Des Moines. 1 was killed. Now Toby is serving LIFE. Sperfslage is a disgrace to humanity.
