AMES, Iowa — Iowa State punter Kirby Van Der Kamp has been named the Big 12 Special Teams Player of the Week. The junior played a major role in Iowa State’s 38-23 win over Tulsa as he averaged 43 yards on nine punts. He dropped five of those punts inside the Tulsa 20-yard line, forcing the Golden Hurricane to begin drives from their own 2, 9, 15, 8 and 13-yard lines.
Van Der Kamp is the all-time career punting leader at Iowa State with a average of 43.8 yards on 137 punts. The West Des Moines native was a second-team All-Big 12 choice in 2010. He is the first Iowa Stater to earn Big 12 Player-of-the-Week honors since linebacker A.J. Klein won defensive recognition after the Cyclones’ win over No. 2 Oklahoma State in November. Van Der Kamp is the first Iowa State player to earn Special Teams Player of the Week honors since Jeremy Reeves did in 2010.
