Hawkeyes in the NFL: Nate Kaeding goes right back in tackling mode

Mike Hlas, CR Gazette –

Nate Kaeding got back on the horse.

The kicker from Iowa blew out his knee covering his first (and only) kickoff of the 2011 NFL season. So what happened Friday night in the Metrodome after Kaeding kicked off to the Minnesota Vikings?

He helped force return man Marcus Sherels out of bounds.

This nctimes.com story tells the tale:

“The guys were joking with me on the sideline, saying my eyes were like saucers out there,” Kaeding said after Sunday’s practice. “To be honest, I just reacted. I didn’t have time to think about the fact that we were playing the Vikings or that I got hurt on a similar play.

“But it was another first for me because it’s something you can’t script. I’ve cleared several hurdles during this rehab, and that was an important one.”

Oh by the way, Kaeding had field goals of 50 and 54 yards. He hasn’t won the Chargers’ kicking job against his replacement last year, Nick Novak, but 9th-year Charger Kaeding certainly seems like the likeliest pick.

Julian Vandervelde sang before a crowd of 26,200 on Sunday night.

The second-year Philadelphia Eagles offensive lineman sang the national anthem at the Eagles’ annual “Flight Night,” an open practice at Lincoln Financial Field.

“How many times in your life are you going to get to do something like this?” Vandervelde said in this csnphilly.com story.

Marvin McNutt had his first catch in a preseason game Friday night. The sixth-round draft pick has been getting outplayed by an undrafted free agent from Tulsa named Damaris Johnson, who seems to be bolting down a roster spot.

Bob Grotz of the Delaware County Times wrote this on Sunday:

Johnson appears to have solidified a spot on the 53-man roster. At the wide receiver position, DeSean Jackson, Jeremy Maclin and Jason Avant are locks to make the squad. Veteran Riley Cooper also appears to be part of it, although he’s on the mend from a broken collarbone.

Eagles rookie sixth-round pick Marvin McNutt has work to do. Even if the Eagles decide to put Cooper on injured reserve, McNutt might not be part of the 53. Johnson would have a job, and possibly veteran Chad Hall would, as well.

Allen Reisner isn’t guaranteed a spot with the Minnesota Vikings, but the second-year pro definitely is in the mix to be on the 53-man roster.

Reisner had a good game for the Vikings Friday night, with four catches for 47 yards.

The former Hawkeyes on the NFL bubble include Detroit punter Ryan Donahue (in a battle with Ben Graham), New York Jets offensive lineman Matt Kroul (New York Jets), Washington safety Jordan Bernstine (seventh-round 2012 draftee), Houston defensive tackle Mitch King (had three tackles Saturday vs. New Orleans), New England linebacker Jeff Tarpinian, Indianapolis offensive lineman Seth Olsen, Kansas City offensive lineman Rob Bruggeman.
