Mike Hlas, CR Gazette –
Sure, it’s an exciting time, the first week of the college football season and all.
But it’s also the time of the season in which major-college programs present sham games to their ticket-buyers at full-price.
Here is this week’s Hall of Shame:
1. Savannah State at Oklahoma State
One of these teams won the Fiesta Bowl last year. The other is an FBS program that went 1-10 last year and has had 13 straight losing seasons.
2. Southeast Louisiana at Missouri
Mizzou is 7-0 against FCS teams, winning by an average score of 50-5. SE Louisiana was 3-8 last year. Look for a 50-5 Mizzou win.
3. Indiana State at Indiana
The Hoosiers have outscored their in-state “rivals” 119-10 over three meetings.
4. Missouri State at Kansas State
Missouri State was 2-9 last year, including losses of 51-7 to Arkansas and 56-7 to Oregon.
5. Northwestern State at Texas Tech
They met once before. Texas Tech won, 75-7. That’s when Mike Leach was the Red Raiders’ coach. He would hang a 75 on anyone who was helpless to stop it.
6. South Dakota State at Kansas
Kansas was no great shakes last year (2-10), but the last time it played South Dakota State it came out ahead by the score of 86-6. That was in 1947, and it’s taken 65 years for both of these teams to have the guts to schedule a rematch. The Jackrabbits, by the way, lost 56-3 at Illinois last year.
7. Nicholls State at Oregon State
Nicholls State was 1-10 last year. And it’s traveling all the way from Louisiana to Oregon for a paycheck and a beating.
