Will you play? Powerball jackpot soars to its 2nd most cash ever

Peter Mucha, The Philadelphia Inquirer –

The Powerball jackpot crossed the $300 million mark on Saturday, with the cash prize topping $200 million for only the second time in the game’s history.

A Pennsylvania ticket and another sold in New Jersey won $1 million for matching the first five numbers drawn Saturday night – 4, 13, 39, 46 and 51. They missed only the Powerball, which was 1.

Exactly where those tickets were sold should be known this afternoon. (Check this story later for an update.)

Florida also sold two such tickets, North Carolina had one.

The jackpot, which has been growing since late June and jumped by more than $50 million, will be worth an estimated $305 million for the annuity, $203.3 million for the lump-sum payout. The next drawing is Wednesday.

The only larger Powerball annuity in the last six years was $336.4 million in February. A Rhode Island woman who had the single winning ticket instead took the game’s biggest cash payout ever: $210 million. Less taxes, of course.

Tuesday’s Mega Millions jackpot will be worth $36 million, $27 million for the cash, because no one matched all of Friday night’s numbers: 10, 18, 36, 38, and 44, with a Mega Ball of 8.

A Pennsylvania ticket was one of four that won $250,000 by matching the first five. Two were sold in New York, another in Missouri. A California ticket also matched five but won $525,634 under that state’s pari-mutuel setup.

For the record, more records:

Mega Millions set the all-time lottery jackpot mark in March, when the annuity soared to $656 million, the cash to $471 million. It was divvied by winners in Maryland, Illinois and Kansas.

Powerball’s biggest annuity, $365 million, was won by a Nebraska ticket in February 2006.
