Spain detains 3 al-Qaida suspects

By Sinikka Tarvainen –

MADRID — Spanish police have detained three al-Qaida suspects who allegedly were planning to use explosives to stage an attack in Spain or elsewhere in Europe, Interior Minister Jorge Fernandez Diaz said Thursday.

Two of the suspects were held when the bus they were traveling in made a stopover Wednesday near Ciudad Real in south-central Spain. The bus was traveling from Cadiz to Irun on the French border, making police suspect the two men were on their way to France.

One of the detainees was “extremely dangerous” and played an important role in al-Qaida’s European structure, Fernandez said.

The man had experience in the use of weapons ranging from explosives to poison and remote-controlled aircraft, Fernandez said. He said the suspect resisted arrest.

Police sources said the two men on the bus were from Chechnya.

The third, a Turkish suspect, was detained in La Linea de la Concepcion near Cadiz. The house where he was staying contained enough explosives to blow up a bus, Fernandez said.

Several Islamist terrorist suspects have been detained in Spain over the past few months.
