DES MOINES – The Mason City Redhawks 8U baseball team took 5th place this weekend in the Global Sports World Series.
The tournament, being played at the James Cownie Complex in Des Moines, had the Redhawks finishing with a 4-2 record.
The team, made up entirely Mason City boys, all but one of which goes to Jefferson Elementary, beat the Des Moines Cubs 9-8 and the Midwest Pride 12-0 on Friday. “The boys played well going 2-0 today,” said Coach Eric Burt. The Redhawks then lost 12-15 to the #1 seed Nebraska Bisons and the Illinois Big Dogs 1-9 on Saturday.
The team mad up for the two losses with a couple nice wins on Sunday, defeating the Des Moines Cubs 7-2 and the Papillion Monarchs 6-4 to achieve the 5th place finish. The win over Papillion came after the Redhawks trailed 3-4 going into the top of the 6th.
“We had a great day today. Battled back,” Coach Eric Burt said.
The Redhawks finished the season with a 32-11 record with only 2 of the losses coming from teams from the state of Iowa.
“What a great season of baseball. We have a great group of boys,” Coach Burt said.
