MASON CITY – In one word, “How do you feel, Kyle?”
“Relieved!” Kyle Germundson’s, #69, said after winning Sunday night’s Sports Mod Feature. “It’s like a monkey off my back, with the bad luck that we’ve been having this year, I finally won.”
Germundson (see top photo) started the season out strong, but blew his engine after a few races. He then had several weeks where he didn’t race. “That puts us out of the point standing,” he said.
With his new engine, he did something different. The Germundson Team took it to J.J. Wise in Manly. Wise was the 2011 Modifieds Champion. Kyle said, like he has the past two weeks with his Second Place Feature finishes, that, “Much of the credit goes to J.J., without him, we wouldn’t be here.”
The number of cars racing, Sunday night at the I-35 Speedway at the North Iowa Events Center was down. Sports Mod had the most cars with seventeen racers, Stock Cars had fourteen, the Modifieds only had eight racers and the Hobby Stock only six.
A name we haven’t seen in Victory Lane for a few years is Tyler Prochaska, #22 (pictured), who took the First Place Feature finish in the Modifieds. A tight battle between Prochaska and Levi Nielsen lasted for several laps, until the last lap, the last turn, Nielsen hit the big white protector tire, ending his race. The tire was crushed to half its size, “Not much damage was done to the car,” said Nielsen. Alex Hanson pulled himself out of the race early after losing his brakes.
Travis Shipman, #68, in the Stock Car Feature, was the winner, after a little scare with Derek Green passing him late in the race. Joe Willier came in second. “I’m happy with that. I’ve been having trouble trying to figure out what’s wrong with this car, but tonight it came in second. I don’t know what I did different, if anything, it just ran well,” he said.
Stac Schroeder, #51, after a couple weeks of Heath Tulp taking first place, found himself in Victory Lane once again in Hobby Stock.
Sam Winkowitsch, #1sjr, did very well in Jr. Hornets, leading most of the race, until she lost control between turns three and four with only a couple laps to go. Her mother, Brenda said, “I am really proud of her, she raced well.” Kenny Winkowitsch, #1s her father said, “I did a few changes to her car, I think it helped her race better.”
Kenny Winkowitsch came in second in the pro Hornets, after Kelly Meyer and Lisa Cole taking First Place in Jr. Hornets.
