I-35: Ruby Wins Modifieds and Portis Takes Point Lead

by Jody Spear and Kelly Meyer –

MASON CITY – It was a fast night at the I-35 Speedway Sunday night. Not only were the cars fast, but the races themselves sped right on by. With the pending weather forecast calling for rain, or worse, to get all the features in, the races were back to back, nonstop. By 8:00 p.m. people were leaving the North Iowa Events Center.

Even with the short night, it didn’t stop the drivers’ competitive nature.

Stac Schroeder #51 held his lead in Hobby Stock going across the finish line in first place, followed by Heath Tulp, who came in second. Dustin Enabnit, #777, had his first win at the I-35 in Sports Mod.

Speeding right along into the Stock Cars. Larry Portis (top photo) weaved and passed his way to the front from his start position, which was pretty much in the middle. He individually battled each racer one-by-one. About half way through, Portis had his weekly fight against Joe Willier. Willier lost control and spun out. As he approached the race leader, Travis Prochaska, #21, he went into high competitive mode, passed, and won the race.

“I spun out. I was trying harder and harder until I lost it,” said Willier after all the races had finished. With a smile, he agreed with a friend who said, “There’s always next week.”

Josh Ruby, #30, (second picture) and winner of the Modifieds class said, “It’s always good to start on the pole.” He was smiling from ear-to-ear, pleased that he was able to bring in his first win at the I-35 this year. “We’ve been here every race, except for the first one. We haven’t been doing very well this year, so this felt great! Maybe this will change things around.” Ruby is from the small town of Lakota, about an hour and half drive west of Mason City. Asking if growing up a small town, farm boy helped in his ability to race, he said, “Well, it probably did, racing about, getting crazy on the 4-wheeler helped.”
