UPDATE FROM MCPD Thursday:
The Mason City Police Department responded to a report of shots being fired in the parking lot of Northside Liquor Wednesday evening at about 11 PM. Upon arrival, several individuals had already fled the area. Witnesses described that someone had fired a gun at a vehicle in the parking lot. A short time later, officers located a vehicle registered to Malaisha Brown of Forest City with a bullet hole in the hood area of her 2008 Pontiac. Investigators a short time later arrested Kenneth Donjuan May, 20, of Mason City.
May was charged with one count of terrorism by intimidation with a dangerous weapon and one count of carrying a concealed weapon.
Terrorism is a class C felony punishable by up to 10 years in prison and a $10,000 fine. Carrying a concealed weapon is an aggravated misdemeanor.
SUBJECT IS INNOCENT UNTIL PROVEN GUILTY

MASON CITY – Reports started flowing into the NIT office about an incident on Mason City’s north end late Wednesday involving gunshots. (The photos and news tips are always greatly appreciated, folks. Keep them coming.)
Mason City police officers were gathering evidence in the parking lot at Northside Liquor, 1303 North Federal Avenue. Officers confirmed they were looking for bullet casings.
Inside the store, employees were tight-lipped about the incident and would only say that “everyone is OK” and “no one was hurt.” Officers were watching surveillance video on a TV screen in front of the cash register. It appeared that two groups of African-American males were having words in the video before they asked me to stop watching.
Across the street, one man said an officer told him that Northside Liquor had been robbed but the MCPD was not confirming that just yet. An officer told me that a press release would be forthcoming in the morning with more details.
UPDATE: More sources are saying that a car was shot at and it had at least one bullet hole in it. Another person said that the altercation began inside the liquor store and spilled out into the parking lot.

to the person who said they should move North Side liquor to the South side. . they perpously put the liquor store on the north end. . . If you go to any city usually the liquor stores are on the “Bad side of town” . . . and moving it would just bring more crime to the “south” side of Mason City. . at least they have the crime mostly on one side of town . .

I can’t believe he wasn’t charged with a more serious crime, he could have killed someone (perhaps that was his intent). And he is out on bail… Inexcusable!!!
Maybe this is a bit of a stretch, however with all the crime that is happening here lately; maybe it’s time to declare Martial Law in Mason City.
Have the governor send a small band of troops to help the overwhelmed police of Mason City. It’s fairly obvious that the police have lost total control of Mason City and are in over their heads. Until things are under control, I would have a mandatory curfew of midnight for all citizens unless there is a valid reason to be out.
This might be extreme, but let’s face it, this city is spiraling out of control and people here do not feel safe anymore. Action needs to be and must be taken now!

One suggestion is if they are from another town or state they are deported back there and can never come back in and if they do they go to prison for 30 years without parole! and i am getting sick of supporting these losers!
I think it’s time to consider the possibility that the judges in this area are actually frightened of the people they sentence, so they hand them slaps on the wrist to keep the others in the shadows off them. Imagine living in a town this size and people know you sent their “cuz” up the river for 10-20 years? I think fear is what’s really going on. We need to hire judges who carry guns and have nerves of steel.

It really is getting dangerous to live in Mason City. What we need is a police department full of officers that are willing to do the job that we are paying them for. The officers that Mason City has employeed now are “acting” like they are working by parking around town hoping to catch someone speeding or hanging out by Highland and warning golfers that they should not be riding their golf carts on the streets. The crime in Mason City is not the only problem that we have but it is the one that needs top priority!

It will only if these police pay more attention to traffic violations an messing with teenagers, back in the day here in Mason city a group of Mexican teenagers used to hang out at what was then Washington school, they was labeled gang members and a neighborhood meeting was set up at Washington school, the police an all the concerned neighbors were welcome to attend. They decided to take back their neighborhood. So the police would stop an question them every time they seen them together, eventually they couldn’t hang out there without police pressure. Giving the fact they was just teenagers I’m sure the police had no problem patrolling them. Police now need to step up an do it again. What they afraid of ? Time to do it before its too late. Yesterday, shortly after reading the KIMT report of the verdict, there were sirens flooding the area around Casey’s on North Federal again. I saw a cop car in Casey’s parking lot and an ambulance on 9th. I thought for sure that someone had become enraged about the verdict and had retaliated. Upon further investigation, it turns out it was just a small fender bender at the corner of Federal & 9th.
I don’t have any clue if last night’s incident has anything to do with the verdict or not, but I am concerned that there will be more violence because of it. I hope I’m wrong and people will just let it go and move on.

This is out of control! The constant fighting and the use of weapons is tearing Mason City apart. Isn’t there other ways to deal with your issues? A change needs to be made and it needs to be done quickly. Too many tradgedies have already hit Mason City, when is something going to happen to an innocent person just driving their child home, or coming into town that way. Its rather scary. I hope something is done quickly.

I’ve lived in Mason City for the better part of 60 years. I am not now nor have I ever been afraid to go anywhere at any time in Mason City. I have never owned nor will I ever own a gun. MC isn’t as bad as some try to make it sound.
Well i have lived here the entire 26 years of my life and up till recently i never really carried a weapon, but if thats what its going to take to keep my 2 year old daughter safe, then thats what i am going to do. I try to preserve life at any costs.
