Johnson leads 289 laps, wins at Dover

By David Scott, McClatchy Newspapers –

DOVER, Del. — Jimmie Johnson tied two of NASCAR’s legends by winning Sunday’s FedEx 400 NASCAR Sprint Cup race at Dover International Speedway.

It was Johnson’s seventh career victory at the Monster Mile, tying Richard Petty and Bobby Allison on the track’s all-time victory’s list.

Johnson led 289 laps of the 400-lap race, besting runner-up Kevin Harvick and third-place Matt Kenseth. Dale Earnhardt Jr., Johnson’s Hendrick Motorsports teammate, was fourth.

Points leader Greg Biffle finished 11th and leads by one point over Kenseth. Jeff Gordon, another HMS driver, dominated the middle portion of the race, but problems with his left-rear tire forced him to pit prematurely and he couldn’t recover. He finished 13th.

The Cup series moves to Pocono, Pa., next week.
