Indians reliever Joe Smith involved in bar incident

By Sheldon Ocker, Akron Beacon Journal –

CLEVELAND — Indians reliever Joe Smith was handcuffed, and he and his party were questioned by police early Sunday morning when officers received a complaint from the Roundhouse bar on Put-In-Bay.

Neither Smith nor his companions were charged.

“Restraints were placed on Mr. Smith and Mr. (Jack) Laforce,” according to the report. “Laforce told an officer that Smith tried to enter the bar without identification.

“Mr. Laforce informed me that when Roundhouse security questioned Mr. Smith’s age, he informed Roundhouse security that he was a pitcher for the Cleveland Indians. Mr. Laforce informed me that Roundhouse security did not accept that answer. Mr. Laforce further explained to me that Roundhouse security became rude and disrespectful.”

Another member of Smith’s party, described in the report as his girlfriend, Allie Laforce, a sports reporter for Channel 8, told police, “He’s the pitcher for the Cleveland Indians.”

Smith told an officer that a member of the bar’s security staff called him a derogatory name and Smith “lunged” at the security guard and yelled “What?” then was physically removed from the property. Jack Laforce told the officer that a male in a gray shirt tried to fight with Smith, but when officers returned to the bar to question the man, they were told he had left.

Before Tuesday’s game against the Tigers, Smith was questioned by reporters.

“It was very inaccurate,” he said of the police report. “The story was written from an inaccurate and false report that was filed. Anything else I say will cloud the issue, and I don’t want people to keep talking about it. I can’t correct it any further than that. We have a big series with the Tigers that I need to focus on.”

Another part of the police report described this exchange between an officer and Jack and Allie Laforce’s mother:

“A female later identified as the mother of Mr. Laforce held out a large folded stack of $100 bills to Officer Williams and said, ‘Can you guys take a tip?’ Officer Williams explained that they would not be taking any gratuities.”
