Kuchar wins The Players Championship by 2 strokes

By Jeff Shain, The Orlando Sentinel –

PONTE VEDRA BEACH, Fla. — Matt Kuchar never needs much of a reason to smile. On Sunday he gave himself one of the best: A victory at The Players Championship.

Unfazed by an opening bogey – and the start-and-stop habits of playing partner Kevin Na – Kuchar claimed golf’s richest title with a 2-under-par 70 that left him two strokes ahead of his nearest pursuers.

Shaking off a three-putt bogey at TPC Sawgrass’ watery 17th hole, Kuchar split the fairway at No.18 and found the middle of the green. From there it was a simple two-putt for his fourth career victory.

“It’s such an amazing feeling to come out on top among the game’s best,” said Kuchar, who finished four days at 13-under 275. “It’s so special. I’ve got so many people to thank. It’s quite a feeling.”

Rickie Fowler, winner at last week’s Wells Fargo Championship, had a chance to apply some extra pressure when he faced an 8-foot birdie try at No.18. But he powered his putt wide, giving Kuchar some breathing room.

“I knew what it was going to do,” Fowler said. “I just had to hit it perfect and I didn’t do that.”

Fowler settled for a 70 and became one of four players to tie for second at 11-under, joined by Martin Laird (67), Zach Johnson (68) and Ben Curtis (68).

Luke Donald was another two strokes back after a Sunday-best 66, falling short in his chance to reclaim the No.1 spot in the world rankings from Rory McIlroy.
