Rescuers find no survivors in Russian jet crash in Indonesia

By Ahmad Pathoni –

JAKARTA, Indonesia — Rescuers on Thursday found no survivors in the wreckage of a Sukhoi passenger plane that crashed into an Indonesian mountain, an official with the Indonesian company that represents the Russian aircraft builder said.

“The plane is not intact, and the search and rescue team said there were no survivors,” the official at PT Trimarga, whose name was given as Indra, told TV One.

The Sukahoi Superjet 100 plane with 47 people on board disappeared from radar on Wednesday, about 20 minutes after taking off from the Jakarta Halim Perdanakusuma airport.

The aircraft was in Indonesia as part of a demonstration tour for potential buyers in six Asian countries.

The wreckage was spotted from a helicopter flying over Mount Salak in the Bogor district south of Jakarta, said Vice Air Marshal Daryatmo, the head of the National Search and Rescue Agency, who like many Indonesians uses only one name.

Officials said the crew had asked for permission to descend from 10,000 feet to 6,000 feet before the aircraft disappeared from radar.

Sunaryo, another official at Trimarga, said one of the people listed on the manifest called and said that he was not on board.

“The total people on board is 47,” he said.

Local media reported that a former Indonesian cabinet minister and his son boarded the plane but got off before it took off because he had a meeting to attend.

Hundreds of rescuers, including police and soldiers, were involved in the search around Mount Salak, a volcano. It had been suspended Wednesday night because of dense clouds and strong winds.

Representatives of local airlines and aviation companies as well as several journalists were on board, officials said.

The Superjet 100 is the newest major aircraft produced by Russia’s aerospace industry and the country’s main hope of breaking into the lucrative international passenger plane market. It is designed to carry 75 to 95 passengers on intermediate-range routes.

Distraught relatives of passengers gathered at a rescue operation post at the Halim airport.
