FORT DODGE, Iowa – The NIACC men’s golf team wrapped up the 2012 Region XI Tournament, as well as the 2012 season, on Sunday with a 5th place finish.
NIACC finished the tournament with a 634 team score, which trailed meet winner Kirkwood’s score by 44 strokes. The Trojans didn’t qualify anyone for the national tournament in two weeks.
“We are very disappointed with the outcome this week, but no one is more disappointed than Brent Tarr (Fr., Clear Lake, IA) and I feel terrible for him,” said NIACC coach Chris Frenz.
Tarr would have placed in a tie for fourth with 149, but a scoring error on his card disqualified him from the tournament. The disqualification dropped him out of the top-five individual scores not on the winning team, which is the standard for individually qualifying for nationals.
“There’s not much you can say after that,” Frenz said. “He did nothing wrong other than to not catch that the wrong score which was entered on one hole. I guess it’s a learning experience, but that’s a tough lesson with a national tournament spot on the line.”
Jacob Urdahl (Fr., Mason City, IA) was the highest placing Trojan by tying for 15th with 156. Dalton Olson’s (Fr., Mason City, IA) 158 tied for 19th, Brandon Wood’s (So., Rudd, IA) 164 was 24th, and Adam Brinkman’s (So., Clear Lake, IA) 166 tied for 26th.
Mitch Jacobi of Kirkwood won the tournament with a 145.
NIACC will lose sophomores Brinkman, Wood, Brandon Doughan (So., Algona, IA), Jace Snyder (So., Clear Lake, IA), Jeff Arians (So., Clear Lake, IA), and Zach Plathe (So., Algona, IA) for next season. However, Frenz is looking forward as NIACC will bring back some key players for next fall.
“Tarr, Olson, and Urdahl will all be returning next year, so that’s a good start,” Frenz said. “Plus I think we have some quality recruits coming in next year. This was a difficult ride home and we won’t forget it anytime soon. NIACC golf is in a great position right now and we’ll continue to get better from this.”
