Southwestern drops NIACC softball

FORT DODGE, Iowa – Southwestern softball took advantage of four NIACC errors and seven strikeouts by Leah Kipfer to drop NIACC on Friday in the second round of the Region XI Tournament, 6-2.

Cassie Pappas (Fr., Mason City, IA) had two RBI on two hits in the game for the Trojans, while Beth Mildenhall (Fr., Eldora, IA) added three hits.  NIACC (12-32) outhit the Spartans 7-4.

The Spartans (42-19) jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the second inning, but NIACC scored twice in the top of the fifth.  Southwestern scored a pair in the bottom half of that inning and added one more in the sixth for the final score.

The loss moves NIACC into the loser’s bracket of the double-elimination tournament.  They will play Ellsworth at 1 p.m. on Saturday.  NIACC went 1-3 against the Panthers in conference play.

If the Trojans win, they will play the winner of the Iowa Central-Kirkwood contest at 3 p.m.
